MagnumMac had to become a VFone Dealer when the original 3G version came out, I suspect they may be bound by the same T&C as Vfone are placing on their stores?

Has anyone actually talked to Magnum about the availability of the 3gs for walkup no-contract customers?

freitasm: I am paying $53.95 on XT Network for what's practically the equivalent to the iPhone $60 plan - and I am not in a term, so no fees to pay if I decide to move...

But why would you move from no contract to a 24 month contract for slower data rates and lower coverage?

Sounds like you (and I) will be waiting with bated breath for XT to announce their iPhone plans ASAP, preferably prior to Friday so that we don't feel tempted to lock ourselves into a 24 month contract with VF and regret it later when XT support the iPhone.

Personally I want an iPhone 3GS on Friday - but with XT not VF.

If I was a pirate I would buy from aussie and ship overseas
they are selling unlocked iphones outright and they are cheaper than here

Exactly, It will be cheaper for "pirates" to buy them from Australia of the Aussie Apple store (both of which sell them unlocked) so I don't think "pirates" will be coming to NZ at all!

I think it's cheaper to even buy outright in Aussie anyway!

No...this is a Vodafone decision as per @Vodafone's Twitter reply to me:

vodafoneNZ@nzbullet by us. Our contract with Apple is to sell in NZ, not Mogadishu/London/Melbourne.

(apparently they don't sell to people who own big boats, canons and pet parrots either)

Which probably means a call on Friday afternoon saying "Hi, we'll have your iPhone sometime in the next few weeks, we've sold out of all our shop stock, but we'll have more soon".

I've been there, done that with MagnumMac more than once. But hey, I did the same as you anyway. Just not holding my breath thats all.

Also these new VF plans suck. I'm off to XT, which it would seem, will be a more solid 3G experience...

Finally, I don't understand why you can buy an iphone outright from the online store, but not in person. Makes no sense whatsoever. Surely they can limit the number of sales to each customer in a shop as well as online.

I've pre-ordered (put aside) one from ChCh MagnumMac and I know someone else that has too.

By the way when I called the Auckland magnummac store, they said they hoped they would have a couple of each model for launch day, but ideally they'd have around 20 or so 3GS's.

It may be worth signing and then breaking a vodafone contract, purely for the 3 months of 3gb downloads and 1000pxts, I'm thinkin, then switching to Telecom or one of the new players..
