Yes I believe it will, and Vodafone will say we have 'optimised' 3G. But there are a few questions:

1. At 3G speed is there actually any improvement in performance or is the bandwidth reduction overcome by the processing time to perform the optimisation?

2. As for price, if the dats pricing plans are good enough then will anyone care about the reduction? I guess it will have a value for roaming at $10.00 per MB.

Well ye , downloading with firefox , 35-40k/s. Web surfing is very fast . but the stupid image thing that makes the quality bad is still there.

Speed sounds great, exceeding 256k jetstream, data pricing would be a key concern though are you on a plan kickass?

Dont forget this is a relatively unloaded network at the moment... i think EVDO saw a sharp drop in performance as the service was used more and more (but still exceeds the advertised averages in most areas from what i can tell).

Has anyone got any projected figures yet for average speed on a loaded WCDMA network?

Andrewcnz and Johnr - thanks for your help - got my Z1010 working perfectly (as well as my wife's).

Signal strength seems to vary around Christchurch, but overall I'm very pleased.

Must go and charge the battery...suspect it will get a bit of a workout tonight!

Ok, about the image compression...there is an new public open APN being set up which will allow anyone to completely avoid this. Any day now... OTOH, you can use CTRL-refresh or your browsers equivalent to download the uncompressed image if you need to.

There are pros and cons to the optimiser proxy...you do get improved speed even on 3G, unless of course the bottleneck is the server at the other end. But you also get TCP improvements. Normally when you lose a packet, it is assumed to be due to congestion so the sender backs off to half speed and then ramps up again. With GPRS and UMTS, packet loss is more likely to be due to a radio glitch so the proxy server is more aggressive about keeping the speed up. This gives quite worthwhile improvement in speed, independent of the actual compression, although only for applications using TCP of course. You also get a useful reduction in the bill. Even more so if you use the client.

APN's that work for you on GPRS will also work on 3G. This applies to public or private.

Very impressive.. I've got a 6630, and had it set on GSM only.

Just switched it over to use both network types, and 3G came up straight away.

Did a video call - not very satisfying with only one camera on the 6630, but very, very cool nonetheless.

Streaming video worked really well.. I am blown away..

Normal data doesn't seem much faster - checking emails with the phone's email client isn't as fast as I would think it would be, given you can stream video..

Ok..

Always have trouble getting my Mac to connect to my phone.. This time is no different :(

I'll keep trying and see what sort of speeds I get..

I take it that, despite all the 'free to october' stuff, normal data (such as using the phone as a modem) is normal rates?

I am sure normal data rates will apply so it maybe best just to do some quick testing!

New data rates are interesting, 1Gb for $149 per month. This will cost telecom a bit to match!

Site does not work from my end. Coverage page works. I suspect it's due to me blocking server-nz.imrworldwide.com to make trademe twice as fast (of course). anyone else having the same problem.

Anyway. Official launch is tomorrow as long as it all goes through, Fingers crossed.
