The other thing to remember, while you can record things like the news, you don't need to remember to do this given it's available on the 3 day rewind (catch up).  Also, if a programme can't be recorded, it can often be viewed on the 3 day rewind/catch up feature.. all indicated by the icons against the programme in the guide.

If there were one thing we'd like to change, it is the complexity of media copyright which can be based on geography, time, broadcast vs on demand vs downloadable, Personal vs commercial, etc.

I hadn't picked up that feature yet, looks like you have to go back through the EPG to find programs that have the symbol on them. That is a very good feature to have. There are quite a few features you don't pick up until you start using it. If it had chromecast functionality it could be the perfect device for many. It does have some chromecast functionality, as the youtube app on a mobile device can 'cast' to the  youtube app on the VTV

The best way to see what you can go back 3 days on is to press the D-pad up or down key when watching live tv.  You're then presented with the "mini-guide" which only shows what is on now or what can be viewed from the 3 day buffer on each channel as you surf up/down/left/right.

The catchup is the top function used here as we never watch live TV. Recording is a second.

Having said that @sansom why is that program catchup always seems to finish a few minutes before the actual end of the episode? Sometimes it ends and we have to do a catch up of the program immediately after to be able to see the last five minutes of the program that just finished.

This doesn't seem to happen with recording.

This occurs when the live broadcast programmes don't start or end in alignment with the EPG timings that we receive from the channels.  For recordings we add a guard buffer at the beginning and end of the recordings, but unfortunately this isn't possible when playing out from the 3 day circular buffer.  As you say, when a programme plays past the EPG end time (eg the 5 mins you mention) you can view the last 5 mins by going to the beginning of the next programme.

We are working on functionality that will allow us to correct the catchup start/stop times shortly after the programme airs (as the entire video stream remains unchanged, all we need to do is correct the epg data).   This would then mean we don't need the recording buffers and it will fix the 3 day catchup timings.

@sansom with the Sky setup, can you have a single sky account and have only one stream attached but have it so that you can watch on any linked boxes BUT that only one box can play at a time.  Its quite rare that we need more than one person watching Sky at any one time however it is quite often that my partner may want to watch Sky programmes in another room... It would be great if the sky sub could roam from box to box but limits to 1 stream (live or recorded) only, or indeed as many as the signed up subs allow for.

e.g. 1 sub = 1 concurrent stream (recording or live) playing on linked box

2 subs = 2 concurrent streams playing on any linked box.

Thanks,

Chris

Maybe you could write the special roaming sub firmware and backend mod and see just how easy that would be to implement.

I'd like to invite any VTV users (Gen1 or Gen2) to try out a visual fast forward/rewind feature that has been asked for by many users.  If you'd like to try it out (it's pretty good), please send me a private message with the set top box serial numbers you'd like this feature to be enabled on.

Note that this doesn't require a software update: the latest update on Gen1 and Gen2 has the required player features, we just need to enable it on your box.

Our ask in return is that you participate in feedback on the feature using a private Geekzone forum we have set up so that we don't confuse Geekzone members who don't have the feature.  We believe it's ready to launch to all users, but want to test it with a larger group and get your feedback on a few things before we do.

I'm keen for that. Will find my serial number when I get home tonight.

In the new TVNZ app the pause button doesn't pause anymore, you have to use the directional buttons to select pause and then press OK, Rewind and fast forward still work though. It only appears to work 10 seconds though, a work around is holding the button down (where it sends the 10 sec signal repetitively)

I think it works more reliably though. I had some black screen with audio issues with the old one.

Hi Chris, possibly but we will have to discuss with Sky as they charge us based on number of connected boxes.  Great idea though so we will.

Hi @sansom

Cool thanks. Any thoughts on a pure app version? Hard to do or more a global VF issue as this box is a globally used.

Hi,

My VTV box has been working great for a long time but suddenly a couple of days ago gave me the "Something has gone wrong. We didn't configure the device before you bought it" message.

Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks

Is anyone else noticing poor picture quality on TVNZ 1 & 2 on the Gen 2 box. When I first started using this the jump to 1080p over using the ATV On Demand app was noticeable. Now it seems like a poor 480p or 576p stream. All other channels look pristine. I have the box set-up to output in 4K and have tried setting this to 1080p. Doesn't make any difference.

This is watching the live stream.

For background information I'm on a 200/20 Bigpipe fibre plan and have no issues streaming anything else in 1080p or 4K.

If you go to more settings/information/streaming bitrate when tuned to the channel, what does it say the bitrate is?

Cheers,
Grant

So I just checked and the streaming bitrate tonight is 6074kbps. However, the picture tonight looks perfect so I’ll have to remember to check the bitrate the next time I notice the poor picture quality.
