The sad thing is that I've workmates who can only access some sites from their phones on 3g since HFC straight up won't serve them, and they're used to frequent delays loading pages on vodafone cable, but think that's a normal tradeoff for fast speeds as they've never tried vdsl or fiber.

I showed one of them the difference and now they're switching ISP to get a better connection for less.

This problem has gotten stupidly out of hand. It seems to be happening more often than not now. And we're not the only ones affected. We have another friend with Vodafone cable that's in a completely different region, and when our connection was suddenly able to stop loading numerous sites, he encountered the same problem.

Browsing YouTube is frustrating beyond belief. There are low-resolution videos that can take several minutes to finally start loading.

Fortunately, TDR got a hold of me in record time (<24 hours after submitting the form). I explained the problem to the facilitator, and he was an awesome listener. He asked me for information and seemed genuinely interested in the case. Not even 1.5 hours after I'd finished the call with TDR, I received further correspondence from Vodafone. They informed me that the case had been escalated, and it sounds like they'll be in touch sometime this coming week.

It feels like I can take a breath of fresh air again after finally submitting something to TDR. It no longer feels like my complaints are simply being thrown into the void.

It is unfortunate that you had to escalate your complaint to the TDR.  Surely vfone could have sorted the problem out much sooner.

This problem just keeps getting worse by the day!! I'm frequently hitting sites and videos that take anywhere between 30 and 90 seconds to finally start loading. I use a neat little Chrome extension to gauge how long things take to load, and the numbers often just are not pretty.

This morning it took 1.5 minutes for a 480p video to finally start playing at all. :\

question, do you have the same problem on mobile devices using wifi and have you tried other devices on your network? ie used a different laptop/desktop?

does using a different browser change the symptoms?

Yes, when I notice an issue, it affects all devices on the network. We have a friend a couple of kilometres away who is also on Vodafone, and he has the same problems that we do. When YouTube was inaccessible to us for an extended period of time, it was also inaccessible to him.

These problems do not occur if I'm connecting through 3G, be it through my phone itself or via tethering.

Its a real shame that it takes so much effort from the customer to finally get some progress from Vodafone.

Hi Kodiack,

Sorry to hear about the super slow access and great work in escalating to resolve the issue!
Dare i ask if  the DNS tweak make any difference?

Can you post the output on which Google cluster your directed too from this? It will help the support staff at Vodafone and Google if your pointing at one outside Vodafone NZ.
https://redirector.googlevideo.com/report_mapping

Here is mine which seems to preform well -> telstraclear-wlg1 (121.73.224.0/19)

Chrome is great and for many google sites uses a cool new protocol called QUIC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QUIC

Does your firewall allow UDP port 443 outbound? If not would you look to allow it for testing?

I noticed that once i allowed it then chrome uses QUIC to access the local google caches for youtube, etc.. it provides an improvement. If the local cache does not have a copy then i was cleverly directed to the Sydney Cache using QUIC.

If UDP port 443 is blocked then it will fail back to using TCP port 443.

The right click "stats for nerds" in the HTML5 player for youtube should show a live graph of throughput heading upwards and to the right (like all great line graphs in history). Does it show any dropped frames?

Techie, I've tried just about everything. :( QUIC was/is already enabled, and the mapping report shows me -> telstraclear-wlg1 (203.96.144.0/20). My firewall shouldn't be an issue either. This issue occurred on older routers as does it through this pfSense box. Here's a snippet from Chrome's net internals showing QUIC sessions:

I've checked Chrome's net internals. I've checked YouTube's "stats for nerds". I've checked connection activity through the router/firewall itself. I've checked everything.

I never have any dropped frames, though, so there's no indication of packet loss (since QUIC is UDP-based).

I had this issue with Voda cable for so long now (was having issue with Telstraclear days) and I believe this is something to do with Voda cable proxy.. my resolution was to setup my own proxy server..

after this all delay issues are gone...  never had delay issues...

On Voda VDSL here and been having similar sounding issues to what's been discussed in this thread.

I normally use a 3rd party DNS service, but have in my troubleshooting steps also tested Voda DNS and OpenDNS.

My specific issue is with youtube streaming. I've seen the issue occur at all times of day. Running speedtests at the time of issue shows no issue with bandwidth. 65 down 25 up Ping 5 to VF speedtest.net

Using the GLE - GLE/J cabinet.

Google redirector:

47.72.234.172 => vodafonenz-akl4 (47.72.232.0/22)

Youtube stats shows loads of dropped frames, which all drop every time the stream has to stop and buffer.

1080p is unable to buffer. As is it buffers, plays runs out of buffer, stops and re buffers.
720p is the same as above.
I've also seen video just stop and refuse to buffer any further.

Watching a 480p stream buffer, if buffers in large chunks, and it not a consistent stream.

No issues with online gaming or Steam downloads to report.

Netflix is literally unusable tonight. Videos simply do not load at all.

EDIT

Finally working again after about ten minutes.

Out of interest, have you ever had a tech to check out the cabling to your house? I know congestion is a major factor in your area but wonder if there's a couple of things at play in your case?

On top of really feeling the congestion this afternoon/evening, YouTube is performing abhorrently. It's performing far worse than it usually ever does at this time of the day.

I can't imagine how it would be a cabling issue, especially since it's limited to very specific sites/services. If it was cabling, I'd likely see far higher/more inconsistent latency in games and connection performance would likely be prone to massive fluctuations. During the weekdays when I'm fortunate to be at home while most everyone else in the region is at work/school, I get a solid 125+ Mbps. I do, however, still experience some CDN connectivity problems during those times.
