Still no confirmation?

I just tried my old address in Wellington again and cable is still absent as an option.

Nothing official – Still just wider industry speculation.

I did hear…proposal to migrate customers to Chorus fibre and a multi-million dollar figure thrown around for decommissioning (not sure, if just Wellington or all HFC areas) – Not sure if any money actually changes hands, but my understanding there is some sort of access arrangements (possibly cost) in place for access to local lines company power poles etc.

Otherwise, pure speculation and business as usual.

On the lighter side, (not that anyone would condone this) the local crack/meth/criminal elements might become very interested in somewhat reasonably accessible obsolete network containing some copper….Mind you, the same demographic had recently hit one of our build sites – becoming quite brazen and clambering over fences in full view/cameras etc. Left all the fibre behind funnily enough, they have cottoned onto what is of value and what is not.

One New Zealand will be ready to say something, when they're ready.

Otherwise we're speculating and nobody here officially can give the word until the press is out.

I have no doubt this is going through every single legal person as one does not simply decommission a network with quite a few users on it.

Anyone hazard a guess as to the number of HFC customers/users?

I know, but of course I can't say.

More to the point is how many idle connections to houses that are still in place that they will have to tidy up. Did they even clean up the old copper phone service cables or are they still strung alongside the coax in street and going out to houses who once had a landline from them to get the bigger calling areas?

According to a Chorus report from a decade ago .... "There are about 60,000 customers on the cable network".

120k according to Infratil in 2019. Hard to square that with 60k a decade ago. But either way, a lot less now would be a fair assumption!

That's 120,000 homes, not necessarily paying customers?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellington/comments/1mahhz5/one_nz_coaxial_broadband_is_anyone_still_on_it/

Some interesting comments in here, from a couple of months ago - I was interested to see a fair few people saying fibre is just the same (or slower than cable).

If the number is indeed 60,000 - while that's a significant number - I think it's not actually a particularly high uptake rate, especially given the number of homes that the cable network passes.

I don't think it would be 120,000 still on it today, surely?

The correct term is "slower for the same price" aka unlimited 900mbps cable is $60ish bucks vs 100ish on fibre

$60 will get you 100mbps on fibre

what they do talk about is the higher latency of the cable network

Some interesting comments in here

I enjoyed this one:

The network is going to be around for a while yet (if I were a betting man it'd say at least another decade before any widespread decommissioning goes on).

Official for me they sent me a email yesterday saying the HFC  network is closing down and a offer to go with fibre here in stokes valley.
