Your comment "apart from alot of torrent freaks" is actually far awayfrom reality. Because from what I've seen around, most of those "torrent freaks" are not interested in paying too much for their Internet fix. This would exclude this service from the start.

Oh, I figured they were just giving it to prominent bloggers etc so that they would publicly give feedback on it. I mean at least it's not coincidence that you're one of the trialists. Maybe they don't trust many people to be kind. Or maybe more than a handful of people on 100Mbit would bring the network to its knees, like how they restricted the number of 25Mbit customers.

So, I've been using it for a while, and things have been... interesting.

1) Telstra's peering policy effectively kills it as a tool for us at work. Work is on WIX, via ACS data, who only have 10mbps from TCL, despite being one of their resellers. So, little benefit there. I've politely asked the project manager to chase this up, but their peering policy has been in place for a while. We *could* change providers (Snap seem to have bought more bandwidth), it seems utterly unfair to ACS, given that they're peering properly.

2) Youtube performance still isn't brilliant. It's a little better than the 10/15mbps service, but there's plenty of buffering at 720p, and 1080p is still a pipe dream.

3) Streaming video services in NZ are all at irrelevant bitrates. This is before you consider the lack of availability of content. I use Overplay.net for a commercial VPN provider, and there's no change in the speeds observed - 1.5mbps on a good day.

4) Websites come down... at about the same rate they always do. Webpages aren't large enough for the connection speed to be the factor.

5) P2P etc. - this is where the connection shines. You can easily push it close to the wire speed. However, there are only so many linux ISOs you can claim to download. Peers etc.. were not located in NZ.

6) Steam - Decent, around 20mbps or so to grab mainstream stuff that's presumably well-mirrored.

7) Trans-Tasman connectivity is impressive - 40ms and 75mbps to Optus.

8) NAT/routing at 100mbps is hard. As is finding fanless gear that has a gigabit interface. Apparently the Apple Airport Extreme can do up to 420mbps or so, and has a gig port. PFSense on a PC Engines board copes up to 90mbps, but it's definitely a limiting factor. Trying to do IPsec at that kind of speed requires something significantly chunkier.

Effectively, this is a nice thing to have, but without real peering, and real video content available in NZ, it's still got a way to go.

freitasm: Some other test results (yes, I am doing kind of one post per week, and might put all this info in a single blog post later).

I registered with TrueNet and plugged their measurement device here. These are initial results:

1. Wellington = A major site, extremely well peered by all ISPs
2. Auckland = as above, but used for our Auckland testers
3. Catalyst = TrueNet server file peered only to WIX
4. URL = the major site above, but just the HTTP page
5. Secure = TrueNet server download of the same file with an HTTPS label
6. Upload = TrueNet server upload of the same file

As you can see there's an impact of lack of peering in local/national traffic (WIX is the Citylink Wellington peering exchange).

Reality is though, most content providers will have peering arrangements, seeing Telecom and TelstraClear are the two major players out there. Obviously this has been discussed elsewhere (please do the peering discussion in the other thread).

This is one week only, so only a preliminary view. I will wait a bit longer, because... Well, it looks like there are not many high speed users with TrueNet yet so we need more data.

On that note, if any of you would like to join TrueNet, please read on how to become a TrueNet volunteer tester.

Thanks Mauricio, We could also do with more volunteers in the regions, seems we are popular in Auckland/Wellington, but not many in other places. Can't see why.

Still running - I believe the trial ends in December. Performance is generally better than the standard cable service. Completely worthless for work purposes, courtesy of their peering policy.

Youtube still buffers, although occasionally I come across a video I can stream at 720p. Basic web pages are small enough to be irrelevant. The citylink ubuntu mirror hits 5-8MB/s, which suggests they're at least slightly changing their peering policy.

It's still amazing for fetching those mythical linux ISOs everyone seems so fond of - if they changed their peering policy, it'd be incredible for work, too.

Thats a bit of a generalisation. I am a self confessed "torrent freak" and I pay a huge amount in internet charges (around $300 per month). I dont mind paying a high price if the service is there. I tried the 25Mbps plan but at the time could only get about 15Mbps out of it so went back to the then 10Mbps.

I would gladly pay for 100Mbps if a. it was as fast as advertised and b. there were some decent data caps (wont take long to pull down 90GB at that speed!).

It's a generalisation, because there will always be exceptions. But most of the times that's exactly what come across - people who want "max speed" "unlimited" "non-managed" "all you can eat" plans for $29.95 when the reality is that you can't have all that in a single package.

I'd love it, but it simply doesn't work like that. Some of us are happy to pay more for a good service - you, me and others. But that's not what we see in the majority.

Personally, I'd like sensible caps. $1-2/GB is ridiculous, in the context of the existence of streaming video. I've got friends in Australia who have 600GB data caps, for a fraction of the price I'm paying here.

Nobody's expecting miracles, certainly nobody I know, and the people who want to spend $30/month have 2GB data plans with Snap. Everyone else is spending $100+ for basic internet/gaming/streaming.

Prior to going on this trial, I had a 10mbps 50GB plan via TCL, and a Slingshot All You Can Eat plan.

The second fibre connection is having known "Issues" and is looking for the solution, but is also purchasing a 100Mbps service, with the same service level expectation as Mauricio. Fibre100/1 connection has a small committed level.

A small difference between the setups is that the Fibre100/1 test and Mauricio's probe are within the LAN. Fibre100/2 is in-line with the network. Our preferred probe location is between the LAN and the WAN, so we can ensure traffic and tests do not compete, however this seems to have little impact on 100Mbps connections.

Still looking for South Island volunteers on http://www.truenet.co.nz/. Rural volunteers are especially rare.
