I've just signed up to move my voice and broadband from Telecom to Telstra.

I have a Tomson TG585 V8 modem from Telecom, which is just a year old.

Telstra have sent me a new NetComm N300

My question is, Why do I need a new modem? I would have thought that broadband is broadband is broadband.
Is that not right?

Need to install the new one this afternoon as that is when they are switching me.

Just use the Tomson then and keep the other as a spare

As long as you are not getting moved onto the cable network you have nothing to worry about,

You might need to update the DNS settings for your new provider in the modem

Surely by agreeing to receive a modem you've been signed on to a contract for a period of time?

Did you not have the option to say no to the modem to be contractless as you had your own?

I could be wrong but I have a feeling that the Thomson TG585 is locked to the Telecom network / incompatible with TelstraClear (even ADSL2+).

the netcomm might be a better unit - faster wireless N than the thomson. I'm not a fan of thomson routers, i'd take the netcomm any day.

Telstra guy, I seem to recall, said the Thomson wouldn't work. Didn't say why, thus my question here.

probably said that just so he could lock you into a contract.

I believe this could well be correct. Several of the Telecom supplied routers that I've come across in recent times have been locked to their network

Quite possibly - I've never given it a go. TBH I'm not a great fan of the free routers that are given out by the ISPs and generally go with something else.

The Thomson Modems given out by telecom are locked to Xtra.
You apprently can back up the settings to your computer, edit the login details and load it back up to the modem.
Apprently the thomson devices are quite good if you have the non telecom firmware.
Other ISP's also offer Thomson.
The Netgear Modems are excellent IMO

I can confirm that the Thomson TG585V7 is not locked to telecom.
I have previously used this modem on a different ISP, Im sure the V8 will be no problem aswell.

Simply log in to the router through your web browser.

192.168.1.254

Under broadband, click internet.

Then enter the username and password for the corresponding ISP, click connect.

All done.
