This is starting to get a little beyond a joke.

No doubt you've all seen the latest TCL promo
- Phone
- Broadband 60Gb for the 10Gb price
- Free wireless modem
- Free standard broadband connection

All for the small price of $82.00 a month, on a 12 month contract.

Ok, this is only for new HomePlan customers.

Meanwhile, customer's such as myself on the inHome network get.....Zip, zero, zilch, centre of a donut, nought, sweet...well, you get the idea.

Come on TCL, how about throwing you're existing customers a little love? Data cap increases maybe?

Honestly, at the moment the only things keeping me with TCL is the fact we've got so many different services running through the paradise.net.nz email addy (had this email for probably close to 8 years from back in the days of $10 for 150 hours of dialup) I haven't had a chance to make a list!!

Rant ends, for now.

I'm a long time Inhome customer, a few weeks ago I got a call to say that as a loyalty reward (plus agreeing to stay with them for another 12 months) I get a month free phone and internet which will be credited to my next bill. Maybe you're a bit further down the list...

The cynical people out there see this for what it is - a customer cash grab.

Those of us on the HFC network are the profitable ones subsidising these customers.

WEC, inHome customers are happy enough. If they weren't they'd be campaigning Amy to get CFH to focus on deployment in HFC areas.

However, to date I haven't heard of anyone even emailing Amy to express some interest.

I did a whole comparison thing on here not so long ago between Orcon UFB and TCL HFC and hardly anyone even bothered to read it.

On other lists I'm seeing people asking why they can't get cheaper entry level plans with say 5Gb of data because they don't even touch their 40 or 60gb allowances.

They figure that if you can buy 60Gb for $60 then why not 5Gb for $5.

I also wrote a whole post on 45 points to improve NZ BB and most people either ignored it, didn't comment or just mocked me for it.

Good luck convincing TCL to give any more value away...

The current inhome plans (and especially the discrpenacy in the overage charges) are appaling but all complaining ever seems to do is result in price drops for Homeline customers..

Sadly until I get UFB in the year starting June 13 2013, bugger all I can do about it, because for all it's pricing faults HFC is assloads better than DSL.

I feel exactly the same I spent about 4 hours looking into changing providers but install price (or a contract) with other providers have stopped that.

If I was in an UFB area I would be on that with someone else but my options are limited as I have voip for phone and no TV requirements.

I looked at moving a few months ago since the broadband caps that TCL offers are really too low. I was transferred to customer retention and ended up with free upgrade to their Warpspeed 100Mbs/10Mbs plan at 150GB for not much more than I was paying for 90GB. That was nice but in reality, these days with streaming and Youtube in the family 150GB is not enough.

While unlimited plans are really not viable with the way they shape packets eventually or throttle speeds, if I could get 200GB each month without breaking the bank each month I would be satisfied. When such an offering comes along with decent speeds (and I guess that would have to be fibre since the HFC network as people have noted is way better than xDSL) I will jump ship and ditch TCL.

I would ditch their TV also if I could but the wife likes the Food Network and there is no other way to get that. For my part I am happy with Freeview offerings and for other content, Netflix are Hulu are good enough for me.

TelstraClear is stale. Every other ISP has evolved with more competitive options, and those stuck with coax wiring have no options (other than paying a chorus tech a few hundred dollars).

We can complain all we like, 'marketing' will just keep smirking away...

I was lucky with the $75 promo a couple of months ago. On cable here in the Hutt valley and they gave me that promo.

Off topic, but seriously, take the time now to set up an ISP independent email address. I have a domain name myself, but a Gmail account is just as good.

Do it now and run them in parallel for a year or so until you can be sure the traffic to your old address has stopped. Then you will be free to change providers to whoever gives you the best deal.

I suspect this is exactly way the data deals on the cable are lagging.

I have no idea what the TCL product managers are thinking, but I know if I was a PM I'd be very concerned about giving a big dollop of data to customers and then loosing them as a TV customer.

In the DSL space my guess is they don't care because I'd guess they don't make as much money reselling Sky as they make when they sell TV on their own cable. Again I only speculate.

I would be interested to know more about the thinking and reasoning just for pure academic interest.

I would also think in the DSL space they feel they have to compete to get the business, where as on the cable network they do still have some points of difference and I suspect there is some perception around that as well. I suspect in the cable space people perceive that it's going to cost them money and inconvenience to move back to the Chorus network.

Very much considering this. I know pretty weel what I've connected to my email address (here, Facey, LinkedIn) but with the main email address, I've asked the wife to make a list. A lot of stuff attached to that email that we wouldn't be concerned about not getting anymore

And sorry, as a newbie, HFC? I assume this means the Cable network.

I was paying $86 per month for Telstraclear cable with a 10GIG cap up to two months ago. After I threatened to change provider they allowed me to join the $75 promo phone+40GIG data for a year.

A friend who lives in Newlands (also on cable)also threatened to move his business to another provider and Telstraclear allowed him to join the latest promo for phone+60GIG data for $82 per month for a year.

HFC - Hybrid Fibre Coax.

Fibre is run from TCL's office in town to a local 'node'. This distance could be 40km (obviously not direct as the crow flies).

The fibre is then connected to a 'coax' 'head end distribution unit'. ie a box that put's the 1's and 0's on to coax cable off the fibre.

Fibre was expensive to install, expensive to terminate and expensive to get equipment on the end off. Coax was fast to install, very robust and very cheap to get 'modems' for, which is why it was popular.

But what happens if you consider the savings you make by not paying excess usage? Wouldn't that offset the cost of changing providers after a few months?

I am on the 100GB plan. Seriously, for the price I'm paying now (cable only, no other services) it should have an allowance of at least 250GB a month.
