There seems to be a thread on this for every other ISP so I thought I would start one for TelstraClear InHome cable (I tried to use the wonderful search facility first).

170ms ping - seriously!!!!!!

I get 190 playing AAO in America.

Still, being that other people appear to be reporting similar slow networks I suspect that the issue might not be the NZ component of the connection.  However, it would be good if said ping was at least sub-100 odd.

Where is the server located?

The only way you'll get sub 100ms is if the server was moved to AU/NZ

Did you start a thread on the Vodafone NZ community this evening?

Internet traffic does not always take the most direct path to get from A to Z if you want a SLA on latency you really are not going to get this on consumer grade internet

For playing WoW I use a latency service called Pingzapper. It is very cheap and only costs a few dollars each month. It reduces my latency from 220ish to 140ish with servers in LA.

If interested http://pingzapper.com/ref/mattbush

Founds this table of latency over time to various places in the world for Verizon. Obviously it's not really relevant here but by looking at the stats between NZ and Singapore you can see it fluctuates month by month

123.742 121.417 173.399 195.191 196.151 176.498 127.772 129.079 139.622 131.57

SEA servers for most games suck because of routing regardless of ISP. Stick to USW or oceanic based servers.

I am aware that the SEA servers seem to be a bit sucky. I am just interested in knowing how one manages to arrive at 170 ping for Singapore (when as reported US usually as a similar ping).

Obviously if said server were in NZ I would only be seeing 20-30ms ping (my usual for that), so I am wondering how one gets about 140ms to travel to the Singapore given a rough latency of about 5us/km/segment.

One can guess who has been getting fed up with lag at the moment.

(and no, I don't have anything to do with the VF community).

I don't see how you are going to get a good answer to that question much beyond routing and ping is more complex than pure distance from A to B.

While we have heaps of people in this community very familiar with how routing works in general and how it works in NZ and even the links leading out of NZ. I not however aware of anybody who is an expert in how the SEA networks are built and maintained as that's a few steps beyond what NZ ISP's deal with. Even if we did have somebody with that expertise it is unlikely they will be able to point a finger at a specific point and say, "Well there's your problem."
I truly applaud your desire to understand what's going on and why but ask you bear with us and our limits to answer that question.

Actually, most of my post is in jest. I am quite familiar with the networks and the configuration at the far end - just 170 ping !!!!!!!!. :)

I might refer you to another famous person - Colonel Custer.  "There is nothing wrong with our plan"  and "don't worry, they are only Indians"  (not actual quotes but there is a point).

And - I can see you are not a gamer.   170ping - you have to say it with enthusiasm and loudly - like  "ITS CANNONS DUDE!!!"..   Or   "170 PING!!!!! WTF"..

Its not a good thing - it means the other gamers have a competitive advantage.  Nothing worse than being lag killed in a scrim.

It would be good if the US wasn't returning 190 (and on a good day I have had 130).

170 is fine imo for playing World of Tanks/Warplanes/Battleships (probably, when it releases).

When the NA West server gives a ping of around 140ms that makes the SEA server pretty unappealing. Especially when you go to the North American website and it displays a pop-up saying you should switch to the SEA server because it will give better performance.
