Hi, I am just curious to find out what's the ruling on porting number that has ported to another telco, then to a 3rd telco?

Situation is like this, I got two numbers, both were Telecom's, the ported to Telstraclear (fax flag, so the TNZ numbers are not a voice reminder saying "number is now with another telco, xxxxxxx"). And if I decided to port my numbers to VFX, will I still able to keep both TNZ and TCL numbers to VFX VoIP? And how about the fax-ability? Will I be able to receive fax?

Maverick said recently that this function is coming later in the year, no ETA is available at this stage.

EDIT:  Just to clarify...  I am talking about a Fax-to-email service here.

I find this is the most reliable way to receive faxes because of the issues involved with configuring fax machines to share a line with a phone.  There are usually conflicts with Voice Mail as well as other issues, whereas Fax-to-email is bulletproof -- it just works.

Sending National Faxes generally works OK with VFX so long as you have a SPA2102 or other supported device (NOT a PAP2T).

Porting a number that has already been ported should not be a problem, havn't heard of it being yet as porting is still pretty new, but should not be an issue,
receiving fax generally has been pretty good over our network and we have not had to many issues nationally, faxing and modem traffiv via IP is the hardest thing in a VOIP network to get working consistently but generally national faxing is pretty good, maybe some customers that are using it for faxing could advise as I am probably not an unbiased observer shall we say Wink , faxing internationally through VOIP is a different story as there a number of things which generally cause problems for this, we are working on a few things to improve this at present though.

I put some further comments about reception of faxes in my post above Chiefie, in case you missed them.

Whether my comments are applicable depends on whether you wish to have a dedicated fax number or not.  For me, it would be a waste of $7.95 per month as I receive many more phone calls than faxes.  Your situation may be different???

we receive fax on very odd occassion. Both our numbers do receive faxes from time to time... if there is an ability at VFX end that can determine the incoming call as fax, and intercept it into Fax->Email (when this is available) then that'll be great. We then can ditch fax, and for future all out going fax be made through Email->Fax (again if this is available).

Yes, that's exactly what is in the works as I understand it.  It makes things much easier than needing to worry about whether your machine has run out of paper, or has some other problem...

I've still kept the fax machine because often I need to sign documents and then fax them out again.  Sending reliability is not 100% through VFX, so you need to be there and check that the fax has actually completed without errors.

This is easy enough to do when sending, but receiving is unpredictable and you might be out somewhere when somebody tries to send you a fax.  After having a FaxAbility number at home with all the hassles involved, I would definitely not go back to that system.  Fax -> Email is MUCH better.

As mentioned, is the international faxing still an issue? what may the issue be? I would like to work towards paperless environment. And regarding sending fax with signature, I could think of using a tablet, and ink it on, presumably most incoming fax->email would be in PDF (or option to have it in PDF)?

May years ago already my boss was using a JPG signature to put on electronic faxes sent via his PC.  It is illegal to do that with a signature, but who will know and who will care?

I think it is now acceptable (but I may be wrong)... If it is not legal, then I'd be questioning some of the emails and letters that sent out from government or companies. You don't expect whoever representing the letter, sit down and sign few thousands if not millions of letters to the recipients. All those signatures in the letters are an image inserted to the document and get printed or sent. Of course the provision here is that, the signatures are then used as a form of confirmation of identity and only be used for its rightful purposes.

I found this link regarding the legal requirement for signatures.

Of course you can't use digital signature if the document require a sighted/witnessed signature.

I think it's caused by time delays and echo on international phone circuits.  We send a lot of faxes to Taiwan, and the problem is particularly bad to there.  Even on an analogue phone line sometimes there are problems, and right now, it's completely hopeless with VFX.

Yes but for me to do that, I have to Scan, Manipulate Image to add Signature, and then Fax.

Instead of Print / Scribble / Fax -- which is much faster!

Yeah, thats the only reason I can think of for a paper fax, and photoshop can do the same thing if you have a scanned signature to put on things and send back ;)

Mate got faxability and a panasonic integrated cordless phone and fax, and the stupid thing still rings the handsets on an incoming fax, which really defeats the purpose of having it integrated in my opinion.

What I meant was, if you have a Wacom tablet or something and if the document is already in PDF, or in Word, you can just digitally sign it (as annotation) save file, and print-to-fax or email->fax. That is how I will like to head towards, no print-sign-fax, and totally go digital.
