A friend has a recurring issue with her Xperia J. She says that frequently, the phone fails to collect push emails when out and about on the mobile data connection. When she arrives home (wifi) they all arrive.

She lives in Queenstown in an area of poor reception but this problem seems to happen in other areas also. I have previously checked APNs, checked the Vodafone site for correct settings, made sure the phone was up to date etc. Any other suggestions about what I could check? Although possible, it seems unlikely that she is in such bad reception areas so often (except when she is at home) that that would be the issue.

Possibly the handset is not fuly compatible with the VF network.
There appear to be 2 versions of the model. Check which it is, and where she purchased it from.

I'll need to check the APN later. I know tonight in central Dunedin she was unable to browse the web. The phone is a German T-Mobile one, she got it there. I'll check the exact model number and post. Thanks for the tip about different versions.

So I read the st26i model does not have hsdpa 850. Would that make a difference with Vodafone here?

Its an ST26i model and the APN was set to 'www.vodafone.net.nz'. I've changed it to 'vodafone'. Lets see if that helps. Thanks for your suggestions.
