Hi,

I recently changed from a Vodafone Entertain ADSL2+ plan to a Vodafone Entertain VDSL plan. I received my VDSL modem one month after I applied for the new plan and a technician came over for installation one month after I received the modem, so I waited a total of two months before my VDSL was activated.

I was disappointed at the fact that the technician told me on the phone before he arrived that he was instructed by my internet provider to install a splitter, but did not think it was important. When I asked why it wasn't important, he just told me that I did not need one. During the same conversation on the phone before he arrived, he told me to plug in my VDSL and once he arrived at my house he spent two minutes at max there while just making a phone call and leaving.

I feel like if all I had to do was plug in the modem, why did I have to wait for so long? I rang Vodafone to tell them about my experience and they didn't seem too fussed about the length of time I waited or the process of the installation even though I was told I would only wait a maximum of two weeks for installation.

It has been almost a week since the installation and the speed is slower than ADSL. I rang Vodafone yesterday and was told the speed most likely won't increase anymore than what I am receiving at the moment (I posted an image below of the speed I am getting now). I am located in Auckland City and was told I am 5km from the cabinet and I'm not sure if that's too far to receive a generous speed? Are there any tips that could help to increase the speed of my VDSL? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Do you already have a master splitter?

If you're 5km from the cabinet I'm not sure how you've even got VDSL.

I live in an apartment block and have been here for roughly four years. I have no knowledge of a master splitter being installed before I moved in and the tech did not make any attempt to find out or give me any further information about whether or not there was one installed. I am currently using my old filter from when I had ADSL.

5km ? Yeah, tad out of touch for VDSL there.
As for a splitter, if a full install was selected, then it should have been installed but because you're in an apartment, it could already be present wherever the lines come into the building. Did you need to use the filter you have, when you were on ADSL ?

Go back to Vodafone and get them to confirm that VDSL is 100% available in your area - if they say no, then theyve fudged up somewhere and should not have even started the ball rolling... but if it is available due to a cabinet nearby, then you may have to just got a lazy/grumpy tech who just wanted to go home and couldnt be bothered doing the job properly.  Going by your speedtest, Id say its mainly because you are so far from the cabinet/exchange tho. Techs who did my install were there for 2hrs easy, and got me to run a speed test in front of them and phoned it in.

Yes, I did need to use the filter I am currently using when I had ADSL. Vodafone told me yesterday that a splitter is just so you can make phone calls and use the internet at the same time and does not impact on the speed of the VDSL at all. I was also told if the filter is doing the same job as the splitter then I shouldn't need a splitter installed. I find myself confused about the whole thing after doing research online about splitters making your speed faster. I feel like I am just being dicked around by Vodafone since I have rang four times since installation with questions and end up just being told that I can revert back to ADSL if I'm not happy. It's not that I'm unhappy, I just want to make sure I have the best resources made available to me and my family to make sure we're getting the best possible speed that we can.

If you have VDSL, and you have a standard phone service on the same line (as opposed to VOIP), you should have a master splitter installed.

In your apartment, where the modem connects to the phone jack in the wall, is there (or was there) also a telephone plugged into it? Is the jack on the wall marked anything like DSL or ADSL?

rocco: I live in an apartment block

Hi,

The fact you live in an apartment block may explain everything. My understanding is Chorus testing for VDSL viability can only go up to the ETP which is where the cables come into the building. After that it is up to the buildings internal wiring and thats where things can start to go pear shaped.

As for do you/don't you need a filter. My understanding is Chorus does not require a VDSL connection to have a splitter but VF does require it on all connections. The splitter is generally installed at the ETP. In your apartment this could be in your comms room and could be installed there already which could be why the tech said something to the effect of you not needing one. The way you have worded what the tech has said does however sound suspect and this should be checked by VF.

Before you put any more time and effort into this JohnR is right. Post the modem stats because right now we are all speculating.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

And to answer trig42's question, there are three phone jacks total in the apartment and I am using one only in the living room and there are no phones or anything connected to the other two. I have a Telequip DSL381 filter plugged into the jack in the living room that I was using when I had ADSL and there is currently a cordless phone plugged into it and the VDSL modem.

Is the modem plugged into the master telephone jack point?

Does not matter if no phones are plugged into the other telephone jack points this can still impact xDSL sync speed

You need to isolate all the other telephone house wiring from the master telephone jack point

Yes, I have already tried plugging the modem into all other jack points in the apartment and the speed slowed by approx. 1mb/s on each jack.

So as advised above find the master telephone jack point and isolate the rest of the telephone house wiring from it " If you don't know what you are doing get an expert in that does " like @coffeebaron here on Geekzone
