Yeah I had the same model + version, ended up giving in and getting a WRT54GL.
I spent many hours trying to get the WRT54G v7 running and trawled many forums trying out all the suggestions, but I found it to be a lost cause in the end. The most frustrating thing is that you can often get it working for a while and you end up thinking that maybe you've sussed it, but then a few minutes/hours later it just craps out again.
Power cycling, firmware upgrade, reset to factory defaults, MAC address cloning etc etc.
It sucks because you'd expect later versions of a product to be "better" than the previous, but in the case of WRT54G it's the opposite.
