On Wednesday I upgraded my Asus DSL-N66U to firmware version:1.0.8.6.  Since then I have issues with the VDSL circuit dropping.  The log (below) looks like the other end has dropped the connection but I'm suspicious because it was rock solid before the upgrade (and connect is misspelled).  I'm using a "custom connection" because the Asus quick setup options for Vodafone VDSL are wrong.

Can a VDSL boffin run their eye over the DSL options here and let me know if anything is out of place.  Getting bounced out of Destiny just before completing a strike makes me a very grumpy chap.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I am the Geekzone Robot and I am here to help. I am from the Internet. I do not interact. Do not expect other replies from me.

The general consensus from the limited sample-size on the Asus DSL-N66U forums is that the Firmware (and remember it is a BETA firmware release!) is a bit of a crock and a lot of people are experiencing dropped connections and degraded performance on VDSL and ADSL amongst other problems.

After my "upgrade" my internet seems subjectively slower, pages seem to take longer to load and I am seeing more drops/reconnects during the day and evening, as well as having to reboot the the thing a few times a week.

I think the general recommendation is to revert to the previous stable release (1.0.7.9 I think?) and wait for ASUS to try again.

I have to say, my overall experience with my DSLN66U has not been all that rosy ( when it is good it is very good - when it is bad, it is horrid!) and most the issues seem to be around untested and unreliable firmware releases from ASUS...

Thanks.  I had come to that conclusion as well.  So far, for me, the DSLN66U has been a star performer.  The only time I have had serious issues is when an Ubuntu update seem to turn a laptop into a Wifi network killer.  Subsequent Ubuntu updates appear to have fixed that issue tho'.

On the whole I like it, but it has not been as stable and reliable as previous ASUS devices I have had and I am not convinced the WiFi is as good as it should be with regards stability and range...

I live in a Victorian villa with a fireplace in every room and some tin ceilings.  I'm constantly surprised that I have wifi outside the room the router is in. :-)

Reverting to the previous version left with a DSL connection but a router that wouldn't bring up the Internet interface.

Not sure what my next steps are.

Oddly after having reverted to the previous version and then back to the latest has resulted in all the problems seemly disappearing.

So the secret appears to be to flash to 1.0.7.8 and then flash to 1.0.8.6 beta.

Weird!

Will still probably wait for the next full release rather than play with the beta any further...

I'm stuck with the beta if I want the Internet connection to come up :-(

So here's a funny thing;

Out of sheer boredom I tried the latest beta 1.0.8.6 FW again, having done as you did - applied, reset, reverted to 1.0.7.9, reset and now re-applied the 1.0.8.6

...and Lo! The issues I had with performance and line dropping seem to have gone this time round.

Very subjective of course, but seems a world of difference better, to the point where at the moment, I am happy to use this FW as a daily driver now.

Asus kit is weeeeeeird.

So the two step application of firmware still seems to be buggy, and drop the Internet connection, but far less frequently.
