Our office has been putting up with barely usable internet speeds for the last few weeks/months and I figured i'd have a look at the modem settings at lunch today and found something weird.

The modem is an old Telecom 2701HGV-W and our PPPoA login is shown as xxxxx@xtrabb.co.nz

Surely this should read xxxxx@vodafone.co.nz ?

If not, we have no idea why we are running so slowly. The sync rates (14/1) and noise margin (12) all look good to me. Guess it's time to grow old on the phone waiting for someone to tell me to turn it off and on again...

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

It wouldn't connect at all if this was the case - does your IP match you being with Vodafone? Also, you using Ethernet or WiFi as this router supports pretty bad 150mbit 2.4GHz WiFi which is fine for your "average" home user but nothing else.

Also finally you made sure you're not over your cap?

Vodafone DSL ignores anything after the @ in PPPoA usernames.
e.g. you could put USERNAME@geekzone.co.nz and it would still connect aslong as your username and password were correct. AFAIK this was to prevent issues with @ihug.co.nz / @vodafone.co.nz

I'm not sure if this is the same if you're on the ex TCL system.

Yeah, we get billed by Voda and have a static IP which is Voda. We only use ethernet on the machines we are experiencing slow downs on but will check with the guys if they bother to connect to our wifi (which is on a separate wifi router in any case).

Our cap is unlimited so shouldn't be a problem there.

Ahh, that would make sense. Everything else makes me believe we have some other gremlins lurking in our archaic office network.

Yeah, sorry I didn't supply a lot of info because our local speed tests seem to be OK. We do have international slow downs but I just saw the aforementioned oddity and thought it might be a simple solution. There are plenty of other networking related gremlins lurking I think.
