Am I right in my thinking that Credit Card Direct Debits are exempt from the "convenience fee"?

If so, why is there a convenience fee being attached to the $1.00 "test" payment that is required to add a new credit card to the account? Will the convenience fee be refunded along with the $1 if I go ahead with it? (Yes, it's only 2 cents - the money doesn't bother me but the principle of it does :) )

Also just found this on the Vodafone website:

A VCC is usually set up within 5 working days once we receive your completed form. Your payment will be taken on your bill's due date at 1am. Please note: a $1 temporary transaction fee will be charged to your credit card to confirm that the credit card is valid. This will be refunded within 7 days.

So actually it looks like the process is charging $0.02 more than advertised in the help content...

I don't think using a credit card on a direct debit basis exempts you from a convenience fee.

There's still Merchant Service fees to pay by the merchant even if they're taking recurring payments from your card...they're just lower.

This [Variable Credit Card Payment] form of payment is not subject to the Convenience Fee.

Bit the bullet and paid my 2 cents undisclosed fee for add the credit card to the list of available cards.

What a horrible user experience changing Credit Card direct debits is:

Add your card (paying your fee)
Select to use that card as your regular credit card payment card
Get told you can't because one is already assigned
Go to Remove Regular Credit Card payment and find the little tick box hidden in the middle of some credit card details to remove it
Wait for 5 minutes or more for it to actually make the change in Customer Zone
Then select to add the new card as your Regular Credit Card payment
Wait for 5 minutes or more for it to actually make the change in Customer Zone so you know its done (I think its been 10 minutes or so so far and its still not shown up - I assume it worked!)

Wouldn't it just have been easier/nicer for it to allow you to replace the existing card with the new one at step #2? :/

The $1/$0.02 will only be an authorisation, not a charge. This just allows them to confirm the card details are valid so they are less likely to get a decline when your bill is due. The charge will drop off after a few days.

This is normal practice.

Correct it's not a charge and this is covered in the help section of the Vodafone NZ site

I quite believe that statement for the $1 part - I'm a little more dubious about the 2 cent part. I'll report back in a few days once the transactions have gone/been confirmed :)

Gosh, it is funny, I have been seeing a lot of threads recently with posters bitching about things that haven't happened but might!

Can we wait until someone stuffs up BEFORE moaning about it?

Checked credit card transactions this morning and the $1 transaction is still pending as expected (given its only an auth) but as I thought would happen the 2 cent convenience fee has gone through as an actual transaction... :/
