I've had two people that regularly text me say that I've not received their text messages. Both of them, and myself, are on Vodafone and our phone numbers have only ever been on Vodafone (eg. we haven't ported them from another provider). All the phones are Android.

 

Both people have shown me their phones and the missing messages, with a sent date/time, and I've checked that I have no messages on my phone from them that match.

 

The issue seems to be intermittent, whenever these people have complained I've asked them to send a message while I'm standing there and the messages always come through (much to their annoyance!)

 

Does Vodafone provide a log of text messages somewhere that I can check to see if VF thinks it sent the message on to my phone or something like that?

 

I know text messages are old fashioned and most people would suggest that I just use a messaging app, but I only receive text messages from a few people and don't want to waste the space on my phone for an app that might only get used a few times a week.

Any party using iPhone's? Look at the colour of the SMS sent and I suspect it's gone via imessage

Edit: Android I see from your post logs are kept but you need to log a fault ticket with example times / date and as many examples as possible

1) It could be someone has swapped from an iphone (using imessage) to another phone that does not support it.  That person needs to un-enroll (via apples site) from imessage.

 

2) Move away from SMS/Text, it's not reliable at all, use facebook messenger or a 3rd party app that shows it has been delivered to the person.

One of the other people has never had an iPhone (nor have I) and the other had an iPhone about 6 or 7 years ago but since then has always had Android phones.

 

I'll look into reporting it to Vodafone. I don't know why it should be unreliable, isn't there some retry mechanism used to get around phones being unavailable for receiving? If it only tried to deliver the message once then I can see how messages might go missing, but surely it would retry a number of times before giving up?

It can be a number of things from the interconnection between telcos, being between sites and the god awful Vodafone no voice/text when your jumping between 2g/3g/4g.
As all telcos have delivery messages turned off in NZ it is much easier to just move away from sms

Have had 2 phones on same (different from this) provider and presumably same cell site have AWOL messages between handsets standing beside each other. And unfortunately the answer to investigate is usually the same, its an uncontrolled/un-monitored non guaranteed delivery service :/

 

Mine on FV have store/send as home is a black hole of north Kaiapoi until 200m down the road which can sometimes turn into a 6hr delay

 

Its as bad as faxes and doctors/clinics however. Just cant let it go and rely on em too much.

I did have Facebook Messenger on my only phone but removed it when people said it was guilty of really slowing down phones and eating up memory. My latest phone is more powerful so maybe I'll reinstall it.

That it does. There is a lite version now.

 

But l tend to advise people knowing my cover is rubbish to email me. There's usually always wifi/data and a mobile being looked at far too much than it should (dam you social world) and a chime on an email is likely to get my attention over a non delivered SMS due to no network

Another issue is multi part SMS on some handsets have a issue so this is SMS over 160 characters or if the SMS has one of those stupid emoji icons

You may say it rubbish but it's the reason why I and a number of others on here have moved from Vodafone. I could be sitting next to my desk phone and call my mobile and it would go to voicemail. Have people next to me and send a sms and I would not get it. This is with it showing full bars for coverage.

I only had this issue on Vodafone with different phones and Sims.
Only way to fix it was rebooting the phone or airplane mode and back out.
