Vodafone switched me to fibre. Ultrafast quite a runaround to get consent as shared drive. My neighbour and I both signed up at same time when Vodafone visited us to upgrade us. Filled in consent with both our names but wasnt good enough. Both had to fill same form with both consents.   Finally done for us but not neighbour so will be dug up again.

Monday all up and running and worked well. 3 days it lasted and now have to wait until late Monday before someone can fix it. According to Ultrafast it has broken cable between us and the cabinet and they hope it is at either end.  So much for reliable. Years on adsl and then year on vdsl and rock solid reliable. 3 days fibre and breaks down.

Vodafone are marvelous. They have given me extra data on my phone so I can still use internet so have no complaints there as they really were very good. Just thought fibre would be reliable like copper was.

was working fine then no warning just stopped. No internet. The ONT is flashing red on the LOS light.  Ultrafast say its a broken cable. Extemely neat and tidy install the technician did of the ont and outside box couldnt ask for better.  Because it went so sudden I wondered if someone accidently disconnected it at cabinet when setting someone else up. Earliest they can look is Monday.

It didn't last long before service was interrupted, apparently a broken cable somewhere.

one thing I can say is unlike many installs I have seen here on Geekzone, the whole underground and house install is very tidy. Just a pity didnt last long. Very pleased with Vodafone today giving extra data for me on cellphone.

Fibre cuts do happen.. just as faults with DSL products do happen.

on average, Fibre is far more reliable.

i do see it fairly typical around alot of work that it can be touch and go - EG when they do a street in a week setup..

The cool thing about fibre is, there are fancy tools to make fault finding to the exact point of the cut easy..

no more golfer digging like is done with copper.

Just something else to add.

I've been on UFB for around 6 years now. Not once have I seen a red optical light on the ONT. The problems I have had have either been with my own equipment (router) or with the ISP of which it affects all their customers in the process.

Fibre is much more reliable than xDSL. I've seen 7 months of uptime on my router before having to reboot it due to an upgrade.

Fibre is much better, generally it just works or doesn't.

Speeds are consistent, you get what you buy. Generally faster than copper (unless you selected a slower 30/10 plan)

The fault reporting from the ISP and Chorus/UFF/LFC is also way better, there are no "internal wiring" issues.

You don't get slow speeds when it rains or some other random reason, there aren't resync and drops like DSL.

However fibre can break and have issues, as the network is being rolled out and there are a lot of installs happening, it is more likely the fibre will get damaged during this, if someone shuts something wrong it can break the fibre in a pit, cabinet or tray.

It happens more than it should but generally the resolution time is much better than DSL.

Just a little discouraged hearing reliable and mine breaks after 3 days. years of adsl and only about twice with outage of around an hour and a year of vdsl without a single outage and speedtest consistent at 40 to 45Mbps.  Here all services are underground

No issues with fibre either.

I lived at one rental apartment where the speed would go up and down all the time (usually in tandem with the weather). ISP found it very difficult to help as every time they got Chrous out to fix it they would come back (on a fine day) to report everything was fine (pun intended). Was very frustrating since on bad rainy days it'd sync at around one megabit (vs 10+ on a good day). ISP eventually gave up and said "Oh well that's the best you can expect." Went on like that for almost a year before I moved on elsewhere.

I suspect had I been on fibre I'd either not had experienced the fault OR the fault would have been more obvious and fixed a lot quicker.

I've got fibre, 0 complaints with the service in over three years of using it.

Fibre is great, but I did have once incident where Chorus accidentally broke my connection while installing a neighbour’s. Otherwise, no downtime for a couple of years.

Yeah my fibre has been rock solid 1 day in the last 3 months I had issues that were related to an enable issue rebooted ONT and it is all good no router restarts apparently it has been up since the 14/5 according to my router I would say your experience is not the norm.

Here is my Quic referral https://account.quic.nz/refer/39513 if you are keen to change ISP and to get free setup (save $29). I will get a $50 credit if you use this.  Thank you very much if you use my link but I'm sure there are quite a few others who could share the same on here, no hard feelings if you use a different link.

Think its worth pointing out... Your one of those insanely lucky customers who had perfect copper..

I'm a little rusty on it, but i recall every 3 months a issue is experienced (calculated based on statistical deriving of quality not user reports fyi. Many go away within 3 days on their own. )
