I was just having a look around at the plans for each of the mobile providers in NZ. When I checked vodafone a couple of weeks ago or so, there used to be a 24 month option. I don't see this anymore. Have these been removed now and only going open term?

I’m also interested in this. I’m coming up to 20 years as a Vodafone customer, from what I can see all NZ telcos have removed handset discounts on 24 month plans. Is that correct?

@JPNZ The OP did not mention personal or business plans so why that response?

Last I bought one they dont require anything to buy a business plan to prove you are a business like some things in AU do with ACNs and similar. Just buy the thing under your name and you are good to go.

Well @Linux if you looked at the pic he posted it was the personal part of the vodafone website. My question which added to that is obviously personal based.

Now I understand you used to work for Vodafone so why have NZ telco's followed overseas trends and removed Handset discounts in favour of interest free finance? I believe there is so little margin left in plans that providers can no longer afford to offer discounts for contracts.

Thus most customers may have cheaper monthly plan pricing but end up paying more overall

Most business plans are for heavy users, even on the $80 a month plan the handset discount is minuscule compared to what it used to be....

@Linux So let me get this right....

You believe vodafone no longer wants to get customers on long term contracts ??? All I'd like to know is why Handset discounts on contracts are no longer offered...

Look at the value offered to prepaid and postpaid customers per month now compared to say 5 years ago it's night and day

@Linux do you believe there has been some collusion in the market?

Wonder why both Spark, Vodafone and 2 Degrees no longer offer it and all of them will make more money in the long run

No collusion just the way the market has gone as ARPU has been squeezed

Interesting, thanks for the input.

I'm not debating plans and general costs are cheaper. Hell most plans that offer unlimited texts would barely register more than 100 per month due to the advent of FB messenger and iMessage etc. Its only 3G/LTE data people need nowadays

It was obviously a thing back in 2015 when I was paying $99 per month for 5Gb and unlimited NZ/Aus calls and texts that I was paying part of that Handset discount hidden in my plan.

Not the first time this has happened, I remember around 2001 Vodafone went open term only which was great as I around 6 or so months into my contract and they wiped it for everyone.
