Today my colleagues and myself have been having intermittant problems dialling out, as well as experiencing dropouts. I have just called Vodafone who have acknowledged that there are issues in this area which technicians are working on, and in the meantime anyone affected may benefit from disabling 3G on their devices.

So much for NZ's reliable mobile network...

Good time to repost this one from your illustrious leader....funny how he doesn't jump on this thread and defend...hmmmm.

@freitasm

I wouldn't can it an "outage" - you see, last week another mobile provider had a similar kind of problem affecting mobile data only and that word wasn't used - you see where I am going with this...

Back to the normal program.

Well at least the outage was shorter than the 2 months plus of no data on VF at Auckland airport due to faulty hardware!

Is that still ongoing? A colleague of mine was at Auckland Airport yesterday and commented that despite having full 3G signal strength his data device was a paperweight.

And I still don't think it's fixed. I has issues there again yesterday as well. Working fine on Monday.

The issue affected site 201 which gives coverage on the runway and in the gate lounges of the Air NZ terminal. Head down the escalator and you hand over to another site and things work fine.

But folks, please don't call it an outage, or Vodafone communications will come here hard!

What can we call it where you get the message that lies to you "the gsm phone you have called is switched off or outside coverage" 3-4 times in a row straight after dialing when calling a vodafone customer, and then it goes thru without the phone being relocated or switched on (it was on with full signal the whole time)

Because to me that is an outage, but it seems that VF CSRs think it is normal operation for their network.

I am glad that more and more people are getting voicemail taken off as it is just a massive earner for the telcos to have those calls go to voicemail.

This is showing the Radio path is fine as the handset has full signal but there might be a issue between BSC to Cell no carrier can connect %100 of calls and there could be so many reasons why down to planned outage

The reality is that at any point in time on a cell network one or more cells will be down for a reason or another (update, reconfiguration, fault, power, etc) and this is considered during the design of the network.

In an ideal world some sites overlap. However some cell sites may be overloaded if the failing site has a lot of connected cell phones.

Obviously "outage" is the lack of service - I would call a single cell site down an "outage". But it seems the word has been banned from some PR circles and they demand the use of "outage" now only for epic failures, let's say "XT size" failures. Otherwise not all networks would be "reliable", right?
