ok, I tested my broadband speed for the other thread and this is what i get:

Download Speed: 238 kbps (29.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 117 kbps (14.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'm currently on the 5GB plan which is 2 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream.

Can this be a line fault/cable modem fault or something? this is far too slow, IMHO.

any help/suggestion is/are be appreciated.

Can you look in your router (what type is it? Brand and model number might help) and see what speed you're connected at?
Try rebooting the router to make it reconnect.

It would seem at the moment though you're limited to ~256k down.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

its a SB4100 Surfboard cable modem manufactured by Motorola.

by rebooting you mean cutting the power to the modem and then reconnecting it? I tried that but it wont help.

Hmm I'm not familar with that modem I"m sorry.

Is there a web gui to configure it with?

Can you look in the webgui and see what speed it thinks it's connected at?

For example, my Netscreen 5GT gives me the following info:

ADSL Line 0 Upstream: 160 kbits/s; Downstream: 2080 kbits/s

He has a cable modem, which has a web interface but it is not for consumer/end user.

Do you use router to share your cable connection? or you have only one computer connect to the cable modem directly? And do you use USB or Ethernet connection for single computer connection?

I use a wireless router however right now im running it directly via ethernet and theres no difference at all in terms of download/upload speeds. I only use my connection on one computer.

Check the cable connections on the modem and anywhere else you have it running to around the house. You may also want to go have a look down your street, a few days ago we were having speed problems and it was caused by shoes hung on the cable (you know who you are people) being blown around in the wind. Call TCL if you find this could be the problem ;)

It can also help to unplug the modem from power and then turn it back on sometimes.
Just found this too, don't know if it will help you but here goes:  Why the difference in speed with my cable modem?

Hope that helps

Step 1,  Unplug modem for 1 min
Step 2, Check speed, noting that the speed test on the consumer and tcnz websites dont measure past 4Mbps
Step 3, If its still bad then stop whinging and call TCL and has there faults team check the connection, you may need to swap from a  SB4100  to a SB5100 modem

That is really not a great way to start here on Geekzone. Pherhaps before further posting you should read the forum usage guidelines. Mr Bond was not 'whinging' he simply asking for help, what these forums are for, live with it.

I'm not sure what model router you have but does it support QoS at all? If you don't need QoS support (or have no idea what this is) then switch it off. If you do need it enabled make sure that the download and upload speeds are set acordingly. Setting these too low will result in severe degredation of your upload and download speeds due to the router shaping the traffic.

If this persist, i would call TCL and tell them to do a line quality check for your internet as you are experiencing lower than expected speed. By consumer act they should provide the advertised speed or challenge them that you will contact commerce commission. hehe

every company needed a bit of challenge to get their act together.

Ok, I checked all the cables running from the cable modem to the outside, even the ones in the sealing, they all seem normal. I checked the cables on the street, nothing unusual. i also have a Telstra box with the word "Saturn" at the back of the house, looks ok as well.

I created a thread back in april I think, asking if I should upgrade to a SB5100, but many people on here thought it would not make a difference in terms of speed.

Yes it does, I attempted to disable it and did not make any difference.

I will ring first thing tomorrow morning. I just did another speed test just 5 min ago and the upload speed went down to a ridiculous 3.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
