Got back home from a group meeting (NZ Wireless Data Forum), where I also had the pleasure of talking to a friend of mine (who just happens to work for TCL), just to find our cable modem service down.

It went up and down on 3 minutes cycles. In one of these I found out in the #geekzone IRC channel that this was happening with some other people.

Called TelstraClear, waited 80 minutes for someone to answer the call and say "There's a problem with IP addresses" and nothing else.

I am connected through Telecom New Zealand's CDMA EVDO, and I would like very much to have an updated web site with more information on an outage that is already going for about 4 hours now.

What is wrong with this screenshot, apart for not providing information on a major outage affecting customers in Wellington and Lower Hutt and having not been updated for hours?

If you are not a business customer, then you are pretty much flying blindly here. This is the second large outage in two weeks.

ahhh... i thought it must have just been me. I've tried all sorts of things to no avail. And now, like you MF, i am using Telecom's CDMA EVDO to connect (as i have been on and off all night to check the TCL network status page)!

This is getting beyond a joke. After hardly a single outage in about 18 months, all of a sudden it seems that there is one almost every week...

Tell me about it. These outages are extremely frustrating. I joined TCL 3 months ago and the internet has gone down 8 times for at least an hour.

Their usual response seems to be to restart the modem and computer.

I'm stuck on dial up (38.6k) at the moment on a TCL phone line.

It's so slow Frown

OT: Can't wait for Saints Row

EDIT: It's back as of 12:45 AM

I know Lower Hutt and north Wellington was affected, but I now know this was more widespread, since sbiddle is commenting on his blog as well.

Rest assured I've forward those comments to TCL. They are working on fixing things and bringing more features, but... Customer Service is essential. Don't let us in the dark, and try not to break what's working.

I was affected as well, only realised it was their problem and not mine after I rang them and heard the wait time on the phone was over an hour.

I too managed to get to the service page - going through my works RAS service - OMG!! Dialup is so slow!!! I forgot how slow. And I saw the same screen shot - no known problems!!!

Maybe another suggestion for TCL - I suppose it will only work for TV customers, put a message on the tv somwhere!!

Mine was back at about 5am - could be before that, but I got up to check the baby and power cycled the modem - and all worked after that.

I suffered a couple of short outages last night that were a few mins long both times. Got cut off two phone calls and could not ping the gateway either time.

Ok for me since the service was restored. And I use my network almost 24/7 (ok, let's make it 16/7)...

What dial-up do you guys use when there's an outage?
It was really annoying when I couldn't go on the internet because I had research due the next day that I couldn't do.

Word of warning for Byw*fi users (video accelerator); it uses a lot of P2P traffic.

I used my Apache over Bluetooth. CDMA EVDO is a good temporary replacement for landline broadband.

I could have used my Jasjar, but... (A) It's slower and (B) I was using it to call the Help Desk thanks to the Bluetooth headset. I wasn't prepared to keep holding a cordless handset to my head for 80 minutes.

I don't have a speakerphone. I have a bluetooth headset that is great - although I used to have a Bluetooth speakerphone before, but it's gone now.

And I don't want the whole house to be annoyed with the music TCL plays on their waiting line...

If you're a TCL cable customer you automatically have a Clear.Net or Paradise.Net dialup account using your existing username and password. I'm unsure what the current pricing is but it used to be something like $2.50 per hour on Paradise.

This is fine is the problem is a network issue but if it's an ISP issue then you're no better off!

No good if you are like me and don't have a single modem on your network. Actually I have one modem on my Tablet PC, but didn't even install the drivers.

I either access things over my network (ethernet, Wi-Fi), someone else's network (Wi-Fi) or over cellular data. Another thing I don't have here (actually I have one) is a FDD. But it's only on one machine because I needed to load SATA drivers before installing the OS.

But I digress and will go back on topic.
