6FIEND: Nevertheless - these examples were written more than a decade AFTER the Treaty was signed - and most importantly translated in the 21st century context, rather than the early 19th century context.

It is more accurate to say these examples were published a decade after the treaty was signed.

6FIEND:Are you able to point me to any translation prior to 1840 that shows that "Taonga" refers to anything other than "Property" or "Posessions"?

As I stated previously - a specialist collection or university library would be the best place to find examples of the earliest printed and written work.

Written work available in these collections will also include private letters from individuals and notes made by translators and authors of some of the printed materials we have discussed.

Here's one from the library at the University of California.

T. L. Buick's "The Treaty of Waitangi", published 1914 contains the "Translation of the Treaty of Waitangi into English from the original Maori".

"Here's the second: Here's the Queen of England arranges and confirms to the chiefs, to all the men of New Zealand the entire chieftainship of their lands, their villages, and all their property."
