@paulbags If you are so unhappy about this platform I suggest you get rid of your mobile phone. It's the only way you'll avoid it.

Failing that moving to an old school non smart phone will ensure future software updates won't support it.

That's definately an iOS bug as that's not how it's supposed to operate.

There should not be any way to disable or override the notifications or alert on any phone - that's the whole point of the system and the specifications.

Yeah I'd have thought that was a fail. It should be like the find my iphone sound notification - overrides everything. Only being flat (and off) should stop it from blaring.

Looking at the list of phones, seems a big failure of a system that so many phones need an update to deal with it...thought it looks like it's only just gone into ios11.

These alerts woke me up and consequently I'm pretty wrecked this morning also. I can fully understand the stuff-up, my company has had some pretty mean ones in the past also, and I also appreciate the apology. However the problem that I see is all the people responding saying they're attempting to disable the alerts. While I now understand that's not possible, and the alerts override any settings on your phone, it's a bit sad to see people throwing away their trust in the system. Poor form Civil Defence, boy who cried wolf indeed.

I'm in Auckland and received 3 alerts. My phone, a Nexus 5X, isn't on the compatible phones list but they worked. However I leave my phone on the charger in the lounge at night so I didn't hear anything and slept through the whole thing, blissfully unaware that we were all doomed (actually that's probably the way I'd like to go, in my sleep without knowing anything).

I think there's a bit of nashing of teeth here. Ok, it was an accident, and it's only one day. Having been on call for the past 15 years and having kids, you get used to an interrupted sleep.

If you, for any other reason, cannot have a broken sleep, because you suffer insomnia or other sleep difficulties, then the phone needs to be removed from the bedroom, or turned off at night.

If you can't turn it off "because of emergencies" ie family members - how is this different?!?!

The world will go on....if however, it was a real event and you'd missed it, you'd be even angrier....or at worst impacted.

I've disabled the sound in Emergency Alert Settings. And when I play the test sound - I hear nothing.

Are you saying the sound will play loudly if an alert is sent out again? Even though it is disabled in the settings?

I put my phone in airplane mode every night before I go to bed, so no-one can bother me. Probably wouldn't matter anyway, the 18 month old Huawei P9 isn't on the compatible list and effectively doesn't get updates any more.

I leave my iPhone on silent all the time and I can confirm that it remains silent and just plays a long vibrating pattern. That woke me up briefly last night, but I am not sure that it would always necessarily wake me up in the event of a genuine warning.
