Beccara: Easy, block all ports and route port 80 to squid/proxy and proxy deny for Skype traffic.

Do Skype packets have identifying headers in them now ? I know a few years back they didnt and thats what made it near impossible to block.

Er... "The Law" doesn't say P2P is illegal. There are many cases of legal software being distributed via P2P and many cases of legal content distribution via P2P as well (www.clearbits.net/ and www.vodo.net/ for example).

Er... "The Law" doesn't say P2P is illegal. There are many cases of legal software being distributed via P2P and many cases of legal content distribution via P2P as well (www.clearbits.net/ and www.vodo.net/ for example).

If it is illegal or legal that is a different argument, and the main one people like yourself express.
I totally agree that it has many good ways for sharing data and legal.

I can honestly say, even as a hotspot provider I have talked about it lots but still confuses me...

The law says no copyright material is to be distributed.

But the focus for NZ investigations will be on P2P traffic, as this is how it is distributed.

The law is clear. It's illegal to download copyrighted material via P2P. Those two websites I've linked to give you access to content that is copyright free or content whose owners made available for distribution.

There isn't anything illegal in P2P. It's the type of content that causes problem. You are not the judge and should not filter P2P. If you are a provider then you have exemptions.

Had a look at those sites, non copy-write material as you mentioned.
I have not got intentions to filter P2P, it would cause more issues with customers problems and that would not be good for me or my business. I designed the block for anyone that wanted to be over protective about the situation, and maybe for parents to use on home setups etc...

Have got an article somewhere on the exception for providers, thought that was still in discussion.
Will look into it smartly.

Webmail on a phone isn't that nice unless the provider has a web version and that's not always guaranteed.

I use SMTP to send mail whenever I roam since I have my own SMTP server that requires authentication before being able to be used. I think Gmail has one also. If you don't have a mail server that allows SMTP then it's very hard to use your smartphone email client as you roam around from the 3G network to wifi hotspots.

I had to say one more thing...

I thing I do know is that McDonald's do not offer support to customers of their WiFi,
and this is why they have not commented here. When they first started I had to ring their headoffice after 1 week of having issues getting through their logonpage. Their staff (who are not suppost to comment or help with anything) keep saying "People are using it".

I finally had enough of this and asked half a dozen people within an hour and ALL had the same issue, after logging on they had no internet.... What McD's failed to realise was most people don't comment, they just leave pissed off, like me for a week until my phone call got through to them... aparently this was happening in an Auckland McD's also according to some user, not sure if it was NZ wide

Don't know about TradeMe WiFi in Wellington if they offer support?? but we do and it's not really a service without offering it I beleive.

Waiting for some intelligent comments on the POP issue...

Meanwhile I am suppose to be updating my site with a new WiFi concept, better stop replying...

Good to hear, I have a setting on my hotspots to put the IP of the mail server of the ISP of the hotspot venue to allow SMTP... Have not tested it, will start asap...
