I was away at the Nelson Lakes (yep, got drenched during the flooding) last week, am keen to hear what others use for short term, lots of data, mobile broadband options.

I left it very last minute so ended up grabbing a Spark prepay sim, and put it in a Spark MF910 wifi hotspot I had spare. Data plan was $80 for 40Gb if I remember rightly.

Just wondering if there's a better/cheaper/more data option than what I used. Location had both good Spark and Vodafone coverage (didn't have a 2degrees device to test with)

$5 Kogan Starter Pack with 15GB data.

https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/kogan-mobile-prepay-mobile-starter-pack/

Buy heaps for short term use.

You will need to create a new Kogan account for each pack.

Also remember to cancel the Kogan pack otherwise recurring billing will catch you out.

If you're going to be using the large amounts of data in short bursts, Skinny's Databinge feature lets you use as much as you want for a set period for a fixed price. I've found it works great.

Says you can't tether devices, I wonder if that applies to mobile hotspots as well - I assume so.

I have used it with tethering, so I don't know how enthusiastically they lock it down.

I've tethered with Skinny Data binge many times without issue.

Another option is 2degrees Mobile with their Data Clock app. Gets you an hour of unlimited data every day plus additional unlimited blocks at a fairly reasonable rate.

EDIT: and no problem with tethering at all.

I tried it today by setting up a two hour binge and tried to tether my tablet to my cell phone .  Didn't work  saying  I needed to sign in.  When I clicked on that I get a message something like "Nasty little tether" error  so I guess they enforce it.   Never had any problem on my normal  plans.  One thing  you can't seem to do is it you have set up a binge you can't disable it until it expires,

How were you setting up the tether?

WiFi hot spot, or Bluetooth, or USB cable?

Mf910s do open up quite a few alternative options.

Skinny Mobile Broadband - initial charge is $99 for the Huawei B615 modem incl. 1 month unlimited data, you now own that modem. No contract, start & stop the service whenever you like. Ongoing it’s $55/month for unlimited data.

Just wondering if this would work with my TP Ling 4G router??   I normally use a Spark SIM and use their  $10 unlimited for 24 hours data pack.
