Need to confirm exactly what the charge relates to.

You'll be up for a $25 fee to port your number, this goes to the losing provider, and it's charged regardless of who you swap to,from.

But I'm not porting a phone number ... ? This is naked bb.

I note from the vf website on this service that it says:

Connection and wiring
Once you have confirmed that you can get broadband and have the right hardware you need to choose how to get connected.
There are two different options - connection only ($101.20) and connection & wiring ($253.52). It will depend on your individual set up which option you'll require.

I'm guessing that means they will want to charge me $101.20 (given I don't need any in-house "wiring" done).

I had inferred (incorrectly it now seems) from the discussion in this thread that I could have avoided that "connection" charge given that I was simply transferring an existing naked bb service over to vf.

That charge chews up > 3 months worth of the savings I would have made by moving to vf. I might just wait a bit now to see if some other provider comes up with a better deal for me.

I'd talk to them again, because a standard "churn" is $25'ish. Exception being is if you are moving between Chorus DSLAM to ISP own ULL gear.

Ok,

After ironing out some issues I am pretty happy with 2talk. The call quality is generally excellent on my Cisco 7940 which I picked up cheap off trademe, and the call quality on the analog handset plaugged into the ATA port of the Draytek is also excellent.

Bria on android is ok, and I am continuing to tweak it. Apparently a lot of the call quality has to do with 802.11b/g/n wireless, and can vary a lot based on interference etc.

802.11n is apparently best if it supports wmm - not sure if my Samsung Galaxy does?

The only thing really annoying now is when all 4 phones in the house ring, you can get another person to pickup the call on a different handset (unless I am missing something).

Are you trying to transfer a call once answered to a different handset?

Are you trying to transfer a call once answered to a different handset?

That would acheive the same effect, but I am not sure you can do this?

Well today I took the plunge and signed up for Vodafone's Ultimate Naked BB 60Gb per month for $65 - after the $30 discount for having an on-account vf mobile.
In the end I decided to sign up for a 12 month term - to avoid the $101 connection fee. (Although I turned down the free router, primarily 'cos I didn't want the hassle of getting the new one, and didn't think it would be better than my existing Draytek.)
Given that I don't plan on moving in the next 12 months, and UFB isn't coming to my part of Whitby in the next 12 months, I figured it was a reasonable punt to take.
Yes - it is likely that Vf and other carriers will come out with better deals in the next 12 months, but I'll take the savings now.

Will be interesting to see how the transition goes. Not looking forward to the inevitable down time between working connections! Maybe I'll strike it lucky and it will go smoothly.
The 2Talk re-connection should be trivial once the internet connection is re-established.
I'll report back on progress.

I gave up waiting for Vodafone to come to our exchange and signed with Orcon today. Hopefully Vodafone will open up our exchange at some stage.... Maybe UFB will happen... Good luck with the downtime. I am going from wireless to ADSL so won't have any downtime unless there is a huge stuff up.

If you have a decent router you could plug a 3g USB stick into it to run the 2talk until the ADSL is up and running during the downtime.

Same thing happened to me when I changed. I had only just walked in the door from work and the Internet from my previous ISP stopped. So I changed my login details on my modem to vodafone.co.nz and hey there was the internet back up again.
