I'd be surprised TelstraClear haven't just scored themselves a please explain from the ASA. Way to much use of the word "free" in that website.

Who are the ASA - I'm guessing Advertising Standards Authority?

http://www.asa.co.nz/ ... thanks Steve, didn't know about them (Yip, I'll wear the "ignorant hat: on that one for the day :) ) ...  should ask them for a view on the $2 an extra gig for Telecom Wholesale only customers as well?

Is this New Zealands biggest phone and broadband deal?

That's a really good question and I think we should figure it out.

Time for a quick spreadsheet comparing:

* 40GB
* 1 voice service
* Total service cost for 12 months

Providers...

* Telstra
* Telecom
* Orcon
* Slingshot
* Xnet
* Snap

Would that seem fair?

If you're an existing Telstra / Telecom Wholesale customer it would seem like it's time to move providers so you can 'come back later' on the next big deal.

It seems to me that Telstra and Telecom are having a go at leap frogging each other and this is fantastic news for consumers!

But has Telstra now made the biggest leap?

Let's figure it out... post or pm the figures to me and tonight I'll compile a spreadsheet unless someone else is inspired enough to do it while I'm off at the farm :)

Ok...  at first glance the deal does look hot...

Workings:  http://home.bowenvale.co.nz/gz/tc-ad/TelstraBestDeal.xls

Average cost per month...

Ok these are a first glance at competing web sites...  it took me an hour to do, which I think is a reasonable expectation of the amount of time your average consumer might spend... you tell me.

Workings with URLs are there, so just shout out if you think I've picked unfair numbers to compare and I'll square up the graphs.

At first glance, it does look like a very hot deal, so I expect we're going to be in for a read hot week if we're lucky.

So it's $75 (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) or $80 (rest of NZ) per month for phone and dsl with 40GB data, 12 month contract, first two months free.

That's pretty cheap, they must have been losing a lot of market share to make such a drastic cut.

It's significantly below the current pricing from other ISP's, well this week anyway.

not really apples with apples since you are comparing a special signing up offer from Telstra with the 'standard' pricing from the other providers.

take Vodafone for example. (which you excluded for some reason) they do $90 for 60GB as standard, but they also do free mysky (worth $15), and no doubt if you were phoned up or recieved a flyer from Voda there would be some other sweetener like first two months free or whatever.

I would also add that if there is one thing people don't like, it is a special offer that only new customers can get.  Why do new customers get 40GB free for 12 months yet existing customers don't get anything? (I know the answer, it's a rhetorical question).
If I was an existing telstraclear customer and saw this offer I would be pretty annoyed (which is probably why they haven't gone on TV with it)

@ DonGould Slingshot now has a $10 discount on homeline in the 3 main centres, bringing them down to $81 per month. Still not close to the $62.50 average, nor is their speed performance up with near TCL's.

Its quite a deal, even includes a free wireless modem (Dynalink RTA1025WE I assume), as if there wasnt enough enticement!

apart from forgetting vodafone (who have $90 for 60GB standard price) and also comparing a promotional price with standard price (As I mention in my previous post),  you also have the Telecom one dead wrong.

You have Telecom at $112 for 40GB which is actually for Total Home ($102) with 40GB (+$10). But Total Home also includes unlimited free national calling. The telstraclear deal doesn't.  so to compare like with like you would need to add $15(or is it $20?) onto the TCL monthly price.

Alternatively, if you are just comparing a normal landline and exclude the unlimited national calling, then Telecom has Total HomeBroadband which gives you 60GB for $105, which is less than the $112 you had initially AND has 50% more data.

We dont use 40GB per month - we use maybe 15 max... we do do toll calls. So what would be really good would be something like 20GB + phone + unlimited 1 hour toll calls for less than $80 a month...

but it seems like finding any plans with less than 40GB will be near on impossible soon... Which is how the ISPs make money as Ive stated before - sell 40GB packages to 50 people who only use 20 - 30GB each. The rest is therefore profit...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

Hmm, paying $66.50. $55 naked with Vodafone which is now 60GB and $11.50 for my VOIP line, 500 minutes anywhere with italk which is more than enough (and more than enough smart phone services than you'll ever need for free).

Of course this doesn't include my cellphone, which you need to get the deal with Vodafone. But then that's covered by work :)

Thanks but no thanks Telstra :)

Yip, I did... because I just didn't think of them.

Go to http://www.homeofbroadband.co.nz/ipad/index.cfm and see the drop down, which I discovered after I did the graphs, I should have compared that lot.
