Most ISP's that are not large web hosts have a huge surplus of unused upload capacity.

If uploads were "free" surely that would just encourage torrent seeding. How do they get around that in Australia?

There's nothing to get around, ISP's typically buy domestic and international transit at symmetrical rates ie: same upload/download speed. Most services and users consume much more download bandwidth than upload, consider ADSL where you might have a 10Mbit download and 1Mbit upload etc.

There are plenty of legitimate services that consume upload data eg: voip, online backup etc

Even if you were seeding torrents (Linux iso's for example, wow patches etc) why should the ISP care what you are using your connection for - they are in the business of selling you bandwidth.

I guess my point was that because it's a free service, people might abuse it - so how do the ISPs get around that? I assume you're not allowed to set up your own web-site, etc.

Some more tests here, this one using the YouTube MySpeed Test page. Note that the sharp upwards speed is about the time we changed the service here. Also note the 6.58Mbps average is on this browser (tested on Chrome), and will probably go up as the lower speeds previously recorded drop off the chart.

Now the actual video test in both 360p and 720p:

Peak speed was about 30Kbps for both videos.

Some other test results (yes, I am doing kind of one post per week, and might put all this info in a single blog post later).

I registered with TrueNet and plugged their measurement device here. These are initial results:

1. Wellington = A major site, extremely well peered by all ISPs
2. Auckland = as above, but used for our Auckland testers
3. Catalyst = TrueNet server file peered only to WIX
4. URL = the major site above, but just the HTTP page
5. Secure = TrueNet server download of the same file with an HTTPS label
6. Upload = TrueNet server upload of the same file

As you can see there's an impact of lack of peering in local/national traffic (WIX is the Citylink Wellington peering exchange).

Reality is though, most content providers will have peering arrangements, seeing Telecom and TelstraClear are the two major players out there. Obviously this has been discussed elsewhere (please do the peering discussion in the other thread).

This is one week only, so only a preliminary view. I will wait a bit longer, because... Well, it looks like there are not many high speed users with TrueNet yet so we need more data.

What is that graph trying to show, Mauricio? The average speed you get with your 100Mbps connection to various test servers, using the TrueNet performance testing service?

That's correct. It's not showing here a comparison of my connection with other volunteers (although I can see it in my control panel).

I can tell you something though. I saw some number yesterday and because of the crippled peering in New Zealand my TelstraClear HFC connection is still getting faster connections than a fiber connection provided by another ISP...

I don't have authorisation to disclose other users' connection information, but I am happy to show mine, and TrueNet gave me the chart.

I thought of using isposure, but their service relies on my PC running all the time, and that's not happening. TrueNet supplies the volunteers with a modified router that will be able to test the connection at any time...

What are people using for routing? Looking at my little pfsense box, the maximum capacity is barely 90mbps. I have a juniper srx floating around, but the net connection comes through my bedroom...

It's a discussion of the 100mbps trial, yes? Being installed on Monday. They've requested gigabit interfaces if at all possible. I'm trying to find out what's doable while running without fans.

Ok, then...

I am using a Cisco Small Business Pr SRP 521W here. It's 100Mbps + VoIP + 802.11N.

Everything here is plugged to a gigabit switch - the gigabit switch is connected to the router. This ensures my local traffic all goes through the switch and the router really only has to manage whatever is going through to/from the Internet.

You will have a hard time finding a consumer level gigabit router these days. I don't think not being a gigabit router has impacted my experience here.

The linksys WRT320N comes to mind, it has gigabit interface, $200ish is a good price, however I wouldnt expect great things from it.

Yes, it's a Cisco device. IIRC though it's the only router I ever had to return...

I use the Cisco SRP now, and used the Linksys 54GL with DD-WRT - very good one.

I've got a WRT610N also. I suspect I'll start off with the SRX, then see whether the pfsense box turns out to be a bottleneck.

An Atom (even as low as 230) will route 100mbps+ on PFsense. Atom D510 is around 300mbps, I have been investigating one in those supermicro low power servers as a failover for our primary PFsense router.

So does anyone know who the other trialists are, and/or how many there are? I see the warpspeed site has finally been updated to include another person besides Mauricio, but they haven't written anything about it yet. If that person is not yumcimil, then that's 3 I've seen so far. I can't imagine there's a lack of demand to be on the trial. Why is it taking so long to get people on the trial?
