Anyone seen this anywhere? Apparently it out in lots of countries. I have my empty array just waiting for the install, am sick of my now dodgy WHS install.

Interest is pretty low in it as they ditched the driver extender tech, not much advantage over a regular NAS now imo.

MS added a lot more features as well. DE never worked reliably anyway. Data was never copied across other drives in real time. If OEM's can come with a good RAID solution then consumers would not notice the removal of DE. As for geeks, WHS 2011 supports software RAID 5 as well if one does not have RAID card.

Do whatever you want to do man.

A quick look doesn't reveal anything a cheaper Netgear, Synology etc NAS doesn't already also do.

Can they do an automatic seamless backup of all the workstations in your house or business? Can they also restore from a backup seamlessly? Transcode media on the fly? They added 'move folder wizard' to move folders around if you do add new HDD's. You can install add in's for media center etc. WHS is more than just a NAS.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I agree, its the 'whole package' thingy for me. Its cheaper than a NAS if you have the box, it provides a hands off backup, I like the remote access system, and its built on 2008R", so likelt to be robust. I have been bitten by the failed to restore bug on WHS1 and no longer trust it.

Last night I installed a wrong driver on my WHS so decided to reinstall it - but the original version, not Vail.

Reinstall was a breeze, all the data was there, and everything up in and running in a couple of hours.

With no DE I am not planning of moving out of WHS to Vail yet...

Personally I WILL be upgrading to WHS 2011 - my WHSv1 box is old and slow, and the disks have too many 'bad sector' errors for me to trust it too much.

To get around the lack of Drive Extender I am going hardware RAID, either a Dell PERC5 or PERC6 - they come up on Tradme quite often and with RAID 10 give great performance and good reliability. I know I will loose 50% of my disk space, but I would rather that than loose any of my data. Plus I backup all important data to Amazon's S3.

The server will be a new build, already have a case (2U rackmount) and will add a Quad Core AMD, 4GB RAM, and dual Gigabit Ethernet NIC's (bonded since my switch supports this). Pretty cheap, excluding hard drives it will cost me < $500, which is way less than some top end NAS units.

Plus it means I can investigate building a home SAN:

This is a REAL SAN, not a NAS, fibre controllers and all! W00t! Not that I need it, but it is cool technology and I need to fill the space in my rack ;-)

Waiting to upgrade to WHS 2011. Drive Extender is not that big of a loss for me. The folder duplication in WHS v1 was slow and clunky. A NAS box cannot offer me transcoding to multiple media extenders, re encode blu ray's etc. Hard drives are cheap and a raid solution within WHS 2011 isn't going to be that big of a deal.

I see Ingram Micro have it listed on their site now but there's no stock yet (and none showing on order) and they have the price at 1c +gst!
Must mean it is coming but they have no ETA and no pricing yet.
