Netgear PTV3000 is the one in the video but I'd recommend the Actiontec Screenbeam Pro

Netgear PTV3000. PBTech is the cheapest retailer I have seen selling them in NZ. Noel Leeming sells them for $99.

There is another device that @nathanm recommends. Actiontec Screenbeam Pro which is $190 incl shipping to NZ. Both the Netgear and ActionTec are available on Amazon US but they do not ship them, outside USA so will have to use YouShop. I got the Netgear for $80 as I get discount in the Hamilton store so it was worth getting a local warranty.

I forgot to show the extended screen part in the video. Also 1080P videos play fine on the Surface 2. 0.5 seconds lag on the Surface 2 is for my actions/tapping only. The video and audio are totally in sync via Youtube or Xbox Video app.

I am happy with the Netgear device. Cheap and works for me.

The advantage that Miracast/WiDi has over Apple's Airplay is that

1. Extended monitor support
2. P2P/Direct connection. No need to connect the tablet or the miracast adapter to a wireless AP.
3. Cheaper than buying Apple TV

The Netgear device is smaller, looks nicer, powered off USB if you want it

the Actiontec device is more reliable in my experience

I can see Miracast/WiDi really taking off. All the 2013 and beyond Smart TV's from Sony, LG & Samsung atleast have the capability built in and works well. I am sure more and more TV manufacturers will jump on board. Most people will end up buying a latest Windows 8.1 hardware.

My work mate tried his Samsung Galaxy S4 and it worked fine too. For some retarded reason, the TV manufacturers all use their own different marketing terminology like 'Share Cast', 'Smart Share' instead of just calling it Miracast.

Below is a video of them using their Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch running Windows 8.1 with 32" Samsung Smart TV.

Your laptop/tablet needs to have WiDi support built into the wireless card. To check whether your Windows 8.1 machine is capable of supporting Miracast, type 'dxdiag' without the quotes, click 'save all information' file to a known directory. Open the text file and search for the world 'miracast' and see if it says supported or not. Most new ultrabooks, tablets and notebooks support it.

Correct.

In order to install the remote admin addin in IIS8.5 on Windows 8.1 you need to download the msi file by clicking on the "Direct Download Link" link in the Web Platform Installer 4.6. Once the file is on your local box "inetmgr_amd64_v1.1_en-US.msi" you need to go the context menu and set the compatibility to a previous version of window and then install it and everything will work as under Windows 7 and 8.

you should also find the RSAT tools for Windows 8.1 will manage downlevel IIS to Windows Server 2012 too

Intel makes it pretty hard to update Widi Drivers!

Updating on my Dell l702x...I haven't bought a Push2TV yet but think I will pick up one tonight if in stock.

I know different Intel chipsets have different performance over Widi, with Sandybridge being slower than more modern chipsets, do the Widi adapters also suffer from this?

Seems the wireless display lag on Surface Pro/Pro 2 is due to the Marvel Avastar 350N chipset, if they had used an Intel WiFi chipset there would have been better performance.

Has anyone tried changing their power settings to maximum performance for WiFi and for the iGPU in control panel? Maybe that will speed things up

Why to reviewers of the Surface 2 keep writing things like this 'you still can't install any normal desktop applications'? Do they expect that this will happen one day?

It isn't a PC! It isn't actually a tablet as we have come to know them. It's something different.

OK, it took me a couple of years to figure that out and the first Surface RT didn't help by being kind of ... well ... yeah.

But the Surface 2 is actually a finished product. If you have a 'main PC' and you don't think you need two full PCs then the Surface 2 is reasonably compelling.

I've said it once, I'll say it again; when was the last time a reviewer complained the iPad doesn't run legacy Mac OS apps?

This is the one message Microsoft Comms need to get out.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Used the Surface 2 Pro this weekend to watch three Doctor Who episodes on Hulu... The battery meter almost didn't change over those two and half - three hours period. Pretty good stuff.

Just got my Purple Type Cover 2 for Surface 2 from Noel Leeming. Looks like NZ has received the colour options for both the Touch and Type Cover 2.

So that they can mark it down as a negative score. It must frustrate them to now be able to install x86 apps on Windows RT. It does not frustrate them when they cannot do the same on iOS with OSX apps. Makes you wonder if they should even be reviewing tech products.
