I set my PC up to the fast ring but I'm not seeing a new build or updates. When I go into where you change from slow to fast ring it's saying "some settings are managed by your system administrator". This user is an admin user, and it's standalone, I am the system administrator. I suspect this is a bug.

So I have now installed the build three times on the same machine. First was a straight upgrade over what was installed, the other two being wipe and installs of 9926 then upgrades to 10041.

I cannot get the Network Connections control panel to work properly. It shows my two network connections but that is all. I can't change any of the settings or even look at the status. No dialog boxes come up.

Everything else seems ok, though I did have fun with windows deciding that my main internal network was Public and so the Homegroup wouldn't work until I changed it in the Registry editor.

Anyone else got the build up and running and seeing my CP issue?

Wow, the start bar is STILL broken. It's such an obvious and widespread bug that has been around for quite a while, can't fathom them not fixing it.

So I'm curious, if MS is giving free upgrades to W7 owners, those people who have W7 OEM Licenses, on their PC's what will the entitlement be for those users? Does it upgrade to a retail license which can then be moved, or will it upgrade to Win 10 OEM and be forever tied to that machine?

Well considering they are giving pirated versions of win 7 the free win 10 upgrade I don't think this will be an issue

Well considering they are giving pirated versions of win 7 the free win 10 upgrade I don't think this will be an issue

It has not been confirmed it will be free, it has been said they will provide a mechanism for pirated users to get valid licenses (Through the Windows Store) and that the price will be consistent globally.

It may yet come to pass there will be no cost for those users, however, it doesn't mean that yet, and not for certain!

I can't fathom this at all. What a bizzare thing for MS to do. Can't even imagine the reasoning behind it.

Nathan I think you really need to tell the lead engineers that windows 10 has serious insomnia issues.

I don't want to go through the whole weekend finding out which thing is causing srvnet to wakelock, or something.

All I know is in win 7 sleep worked very well. In win 10 it is very sensitive to staying up. Maybe got to tune down the wakefulness ... Take a bit of caffeine out. I'm putting my htpc back to win 7 ...

Check the setting on the network card in Device Manager, specifically under Power Management for the device. This is often caused by waking on network activity.

Easy, get everyone on windows 10 create the biggest platform for app developers to make quality apps for then watch the App Store grow and because of one store for all win 10 platforms the apps will be available for phone also, closing the app gap

ok ... ok ... another dig a hole in the ground and hide moment ...

it turns out someone had changed the power profile .... to one i did not configure ... and it was set not to ever sleep. i have no idea how it got changed .... i have a wife and 3 preschoolers ... (who does play around with my htpc sometimes but changing the power profile at age 2???)

anyway ... it has slept through all conditions over the last week so not really the OS ... not sure how it happened ...

why didn't i check the power profile first? well ...

Task View

Has anyone had a chance to evaluate Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview “Task View” (aka by Microsoft: “Virtual Desktops”)? Seem rather clumsy to me and essentially cosmetic since they do not allow truly independent operation of each desktop and so not genuinely useful to organise and process different projects or types of work.

I was hoping “Task View” might be something of practical value, similar perhaps to Linux workspaces which enable one to set up individual desktops for each project or task type (eg Perpetual Motion Machine development; Image Processing), open up application instances separately on each desktop and then switch between desktops at a flick, leaving any application windows and associated files open - so a bit like virtual machines. Microsoft say “Task View” allows virtual desktops but unfortunately they seem a pale shadow of Linux workspaces and do not justify being referred to as “Virtual Desktops”. If one opens up (say) Notebook on one Windows 10 “Task View” desktop then moves to another desktop and tries to open another instance of Notebook the current desktop simply flicks back to the desktop environment where one first opened Notebook.

So has anyone found ways to put “Task View” to good use?
