Well I'm stumped, no network activity - just a message saying upgrade reserved in windows update.

The C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder once deleted comes back as 1.69MB.

$Windows.~BT folder last modified 31/01/15 and 987MB in size.

Not sure what else I can try!

rurd2di: So if i get the ISO , can i upgrade from 8.1 or do i need to do the whole windows update upgrade , for licencing purposes?

either will work

you can use the downloadable ISO at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 which has an embedded product key.  Using that ISO, run SETUP.EXE *from within Windows 8.1 so that it can detect that you have a licensed, activated OS*.  Then when it asks what you want to migrate, choose “nothing” or “data only”.  That will result in a “clean” Windows 10 OS that can successfully activate.

If you do a clean install using Windows 10 media (any media) and never went through the upgrade process, you won’t have a license and the machine won’t activate.

browned: ISO can be used to run the upgrade instead of WU. Just run setup.exe from Windows, or boot fromUSB/DVD ISO and select upgrade option.

if you boot from ISO, you won't have a Windows 10 key unless you've done the below once:

To clean install the first time -  use the downloadable ISO at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 which has an embedded product key.

Use the tool at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and install that way?

I've met with mixed success today:

10 PCs (with assorted hardware) all running (legit) Windows 7 Pro:

NO prompts to upgrade

4 x upgraded successfully using the "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" command

2 x upgraded successfully using MediaCreationToolx64.exe

2 x "Something happened" with MediaCreationToolx64.exe

2 x to stay with Win 7 as backup PCs

Just tried wuauaclt.exe /update again and now is downloading 18 updates, but before this it said I was up to date.  When I say downloading though there is still no network activity. After a few minutes of no activity I tried stopping and restarting. Stopping yields "WindowsUpdate_80073CF9" Which when I google it only comes up with windows phone. Try again button yields Windows 10 upgrade reserved. Unsure about the supposed 18 updates...

Might eventually install from isol but it appears something is a bit fishy regardless.

sure, but just remember you're trying to force this rather than let it roll out as planned in waves :)

Finally got my 8.1 desktop installed, liking Edge a lot, and I don't get many ads, apart from the odd flash one.

I see that it *still* requires you to enter a hint when setting your password... and still accepts a space :)

Edit: And it still has an "8" on the login screen. I noticed it on the "insider" build a while back but figured that it was just some leftover cruft in my install. One clean install later, it's still there.

Well I got in briefly, but Nvidia drivers have borked my install, and I can't seem to Uninstall em. I'm guessing my key should be fine now, so fresh install time

Tried to upgrade,  and then the "Something Happened/Something happened" window appears. Seriously, is this taking the mickey?  I understand that with software weird stuff sometimes happens, but who in their right mind creates an error/dialog box that says this?  Now what I am supposed to do?  Really Microsoft I know you get a lot of hate, but when you stuff like this, you deserve every bit of opprobrium that is heaped upon you.
