If LAN connectivity is fine, but internet connectivity dies - does it die for all devices simultaneously, or is device-specific? If the latter, what result do you get trying to ping google.co.nz and 8.8.8.8 while it's 'broken'? I'm using Win 8.1 on one of my devices, and have VDSL using a TG589vn and have zero issues relating to 8.1.

That looks almost like a name resolution issue to me - the fact you can ping 8.8.8.8 indicates your internet connection is up and usable. google.co.nz should typically resolve to 74.125.227.x. 198.18.0.0/15 is an IANA benchmark reserved range.
