If you want to run Windows 10, get used to being forced to do updates. If you don't like that, downgrade to 7/8 while they are still in support, so you have an extra year or two before you have to suck it up and accept the new reality.

Windows 8 and 7 don't support newer CPU architecture.

And actually you can group policy stop Windows 10 updates, so i am just fine using 1607.

Even Microsoft acknowledge the issue.

For example 1607 with 1080ti i get 80 to 100% gpu usage, but with fu and cu updates something is screwy with game mode and window optimization that disabling them does not fix and i get 60 to 70% usage and much lower fps.

And its got nothing to do with throttling or CPU loading as no single core is above 30% in threaded applications or 75% in more single threaded applications, also when running streaming software at the same time as gaming work well in 1607 but in fu and cu updates it goes to hell.

Thought I would try Windows 10 again, I have a fairly old version on a DVD.   (I should have just downloaded the latest iso using Linux & browser)    Anyway, I installed Windows 10 & got the dreaded message that this version of Windows 10 cannot be updated & a new version has to be downloaded.    After several hours and multiple reboots I finally had Version 1709 fully installed & everything set up automatically even the HP printer.    My only gripe is the time it took for all this to be done.   My plan was to dual boot with Xubuntu.

As a comparison I downloaded an Xubuntu 16.04 64 bit iso as I had read that the 64 bit version would get the Meltdown patch first. After installing I did a 369 mb update which took a total of 12 minutes including the download, install, and rebooting to the desktop!

Actually I just rolled my threadripper build back from 1709, to 1703 and now back to 1607..

The reason I have is that gaming FPS and program thread throttling by windows have made streaming almost impossible if you are cpu encoding in CU and FU updates.

This issue is endlessly annoying, I'm very keen to see the release of the fix for this pushed all the way out.

microsoft delivered 2 updates on 19th January which included fixes for AMD processor restarts etc. After this I manually installed the creator update . All ok but as expected toolbar display icons were minute. i have since found fixes for these but remain pissed off that 1709 updates were delivered to me while beta testing was stil in progress.

just a note, look for manufacturer bios updates after updating windows intel/amd kernel patch/fix. may or may not improve your system's performance.

May I ask how you achieved this state of nirvana?

My laptop is OK on 1607, but 1709 kills it.

I dont know about 1703 as I can't find that version to install.

But I would be happy to stay on 1607 until a compatible update is released in the future.

mu laptop is windows 1607 and have avoided 1709 (creator )like the plague after trying it on my desktop. Today I have three unasked for • Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709 which have all failed. How can I delete it permanently?

Why on earth don't you want 3d objects in microsoft paint?   I don't get it.

I wouldn't have minded it - in fact I had to do a little job on an image (put a bit of text on it) and was thrilled to see it would let me right justify the text (the old paint wouldnt let you do anything like that).

Fired it up and tried it - it crashes every time to try and select a font!

Mostly treat it as an OS update like the downloaded version
