Seems like after upgrading from 32bit Windows 7 to 32bit Windows 10, then 64bit Windows 10 can be clean installed and it self-activates. The CPU is 64bit.

@sbiddle, thanks. I'm keen to go for the upgrade to WIndows 10. Have you heard about the above upgrade (fresh install) from 32bit to 64bit WIndows 10?

@kiwifruta follow my advice above. No need to waste time doing an upgrade. Just fresh install Windows 10 onto a freshly installed SSD using current Windows 7 product key.

I found another way of activating Windows 10 on a machine with no real license as well - I wont say how/what because Id get booted out ;)

Lets just say Microsoft are extremely lax about Win10 activation.

Will be interesting to see what happens this weekend through when I swap the CPU out for a different one.

Most run of the mill SSD's are OK. I tend to stick with Samsung, Intel, Kingston, Crucial brands. Something like this:

Any SSD is going to be a big improvement over what you have at present. You can get a 500GB for around $100 these days and they'll all have similar performance.

I can't comment on a fresh install on win10 64 bit using a win7 32 licence - you may need to do an upgrade to the 32bit Win 10 and then do a fresh install of the 64 bit once the 32bit is activated.

Also here's the link below to download Windows 10 media, use "Create Windows 10 installation media" and create USB. Make sure it creates the 64bit version.

Changing the CPU doesn't trigger it, did it last weekend as well. :)

I have done a fresh install on totally new hardware and it activated once I logged in with my microsoft account. This is new mobo, ram, CPU, nvme SSD in an old case. I was all set to put one of the 7 keys in from the pile of old case parts I have lying around with OEM stickers on them but it didnt need it.

Microsoft don't say this but I've personally upgraded 3 or 4 machines recently that have all activated fine.

Actually its not (not a free update).
MS have specially stated the free update period is over, and stated that activation is not an indication of a valid 10 license

7-10 upgrade does still work though :-)
wipe & do a fresh install of 64b win10 , forget 32bit .
Then hope it doesnt all turn to custard, as can happen when helping out friends with flakey PC's

MS have said the free update period is over, but that's never resulted in updates failing. Do you have a source for that statement about not having a valid licence? I have certainly never read anything that indicates this.

Once Windows is activated it has a digital licence which can be viewed from inside Windows.

if it were me i would put in an SSD, clean install* win 10 64 bit. don't even think just do it.

then get as much ram in there as you can afford but less important.

*tis free but there's a few steps involved.

Has anyone encountered problems with unsupported drivers when upgrading to Win 10?

The reason I ask. My memory is a bit hazy but I seem to remember deciding try the upgrade right at the end of the 'free" offer but it wouldn't let me do it because Dell weren't providing Win 10 drivers. At that point I decided not to bother.

I had a friend in aussie whose SSD died so had to do a re-install from scratch on a new one. Originally the system was running Win7 and he'd done the Win10 upgrade (ages ago) and it was activated.

After he replaced the SSD and re-installed win10 didn't re-activate, so he rang MS and was told 'the windows 7 license you upgraded from was an OEM licence and w10 can't be re-registered'. So had to buy a new w10 license.
