no, that's a bad idea. The LAN is an endless cycle of more and less boxes. Reduced when first moved to Virtual, now expanding again with WHS, ISA and a secondary Hyper-V server **sigh**

anyway, back on topic. The "Storage Balance" has run again with duplication turned off, however, the system is still using 860GB? Do I need to reinstall WHS to fix this?

After Rebalance

it has also introduced this conflict with the prepackaged software files.

Can't fix this so reinstalling. Configure with SMB file share on the internal and (hopefully) UPnP on the peripheral (not sure about discover behind the firewall). Does any know if you can have UPnP behind an ISA firewall but accessible from peripheral?

OK not qute sure what you mean so forgive me if I am way off base.
All shares MUST be setup from within the console. Creating a share from the server interface will cause major issues. I have a small (40GB) drive installed in the Home server to use for application data storage which is not part of the Home server pool.

I would have though the ISA firewall would not be a problem as long as it is configured correctly.

What I suspect the challenge will be is that DLNA server ports are potentially dynamic. I suspect (I'm still looking for a "how it actually works" article) that the discovery will be somewhat like DHCP, whereby ISA will have to be configured for the discovery traffic (broadcast?), which I see as possible, however, dynamic ports look troublesome. Then of course, how much overhead of travel time will ISA add?

WHS is based on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 and I have Power Pack 3 installed. ISA is 2006 on Server 2003 SP2. After reinstalling WHS it has configured the disks as per standard (20GB) for SYS. Before I load content to it I'll by another 2TB drive so I can have duplication (currently disabled). Although according to documetation I should be able to add a drive to the existing pool, this was not the case last time, so I'm anticipating yet another re-install.

Can you make your home environment any more complex? Why do you even need ISA between internal clients

back plane load on my existing switch and round trip problems lead me to choose to have a split LAN, this along with my desire to have a VPN lead me to ISA (along with having used it as a client at work, I was concinved that it was a solution I desired). Further to this, the desire to split away my media content (served on wireless, which is a security compromise)from the domain lead to the final internal, peripheral and DZM allocations controlled by ISA.

Note: diagram represents current state, once I complete migration of media content from domain to WHS, then it will be moved into the DMZ along with the HTPC.

Should definitely not need a reinstall. It is one of the core features of WHS so if it did not work I think there would be just a few unhappy people (me being one of them). I think for whatever reason your last install was somewhat broken which would have caused the problems with the install.

I have the wireless side of my network and the internal side both connected to my Astaro firewall on different subnets. With the right rules setup and DNS working (without internal DNS I had problems with connections to the home server) most things work across it fine. However I think you may have problems with UPnP. I had problems with the Xbox extender software and also Apples Remote app on the ipad which would not work on a different subnet.

DLNA/UPnP is the only reason for it's existance, hence moving it off the domain and into the DMZ.

It did not like a unpartitioned/unformatted drive being added. I tried to format it using the inbuilt windows Disk Manager, but it never came right. When I reinstalled, the drive was partitioned and formatted and worked fine.

no, that is where I took a wrong turn (in spite of the default page that comes up and tells me "hey you, stop right there, you don't know as much as you think you do!"). I wondered of into the Computer --> Manage --> Disk Management --> format, and WHS did not like that one little bit. It never got over what I did to it, and hence the reinstall (and lesson learned).

Ah yeah that would have upset it. You do have to delve into the desktop if you start doing some things that are not supported (I run WSUS on my WHS amongst other things) but it is best to stick to things in the console when possible and I stick to mods that someone else has already tried and confirmed works.
