I trial loaded and now reloaded WHS server. I have two drives 80GB and 2TB. In the first trial I had only the 80GB and the system took up 20GB, now with the second drive the system has decided to take 859 GB!?!?

Have you logged into the desktop (using RDP) and had a look at what is really being used? Certainly the system will never take up that much room so I think the used space is being reported incorrectly.

Let the system do its "balancng" for another day. "System" is not only the 20GB storage on the first drive, but also all the duplication information (tombstones, etc) and other management storage.

In my case System is using 61GB.

You only have one large drive and the system drive. In your case I suggest you turn duplication off for all folders. Realistically you can only have up to 40GB duplicated because that's the maximum in common between both your drives. Everything else is really stored in the large drive twice.

It means you have slow performance (double writing everything on the same drive) and no redundancy at all.

Also removing the duplication will probably adjust the "System" usage and after some balancing it will bring it to normal levels.

so if I installed another 2TB it would build an equivalent 1+1 RAID behavior (without striped read I assume)?

so in WHS, do you get the improved read performance by reading from both drives?

I wouldn't worry about "improved read performance". Your network is more likely to limit the transfer speeds between PCs anyway.

Duplication is configured at a directory level, which is nice, so I have removed duplication for non-essential and duplication only for essential, family photos, etc. I hope that when the next rebalance occures it will be all good.

Does Windows Home Server support RAID?

Windows Home Server offers the benefits of RAID, without the complexity. New hard drives of any size, either internal or external, can be added to Windows Home Server and the amount of available storage grows based on the size of the hard disk. On a system with two or more hard drives, Windows Home Server users can enable "duplication" on a shared folder basis and files are copied or "mirrored" on two separate hard drives. If a single hard drive fails, then a user will not lose any files in any folder that has "duplication" enabled. External hard drives can be added via USB, Firewire, or eSATA, provided the Windows Home Server has the appropriate hardware inputs.

Out of interest I think it requires 160gb, so it could have used a percentage of the first disk as the OS, another percentage as storage and a bit more for shadow copy which in vail I think is on by default.

WHS (in my limited experience) is fixed to 20GB for system, this can not be changed during installation (I've read a few forums where people have tried after with limited success). WHS writes to the second drive (if you have one) first, before writing to the remainder on the system drive.
