How much is the Pro pack in retail stores? This is supposed to add WMC and "Pro" a standard install.

Retail Win8 Pro upgrade is $89.99 (32 bit ands 64 bit Versions) WMC not included, has to be paid for and installed as an 'extra feature'

I didn't mean Pro upgrade from previous versions of windows.

There is a retail box upgrade for Win 8 to Win 8 Pro which bundles WMC.

I wonder how much it costs though.

Ridiculous.

Pricing of the retail Plus Pack (upgrades Win 8 to Win 8 Pro for OEM machines with Win 8 standard) costs $58 AUD ie same as the promotional pricing for Win 8 Pro upgrade ($58 AUD, which sells in NZ for $88 NZD at Harvey Norman's GeekZone).

If you hate Metro, then I can recommend StartIsBack as an excellent 3rd party app to bring back the Windows 7 start menu.

I've been running 8 for the last week, or so, on a few systems with them booting straight to the desktop and acting as slightly faster Windows 7 machines. The only thing I miss is most of Aero glass being removed.

I have been using Windows 8 on the HP 4530s probook and honestly dont notice a difference in speed. Its about the same. Cold booting is around 35 seconds which is quicker but general use is not any noticeable difference.
I do prefer the tiles menu to the old start. Didnt think I would but persevered and really love it now.

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

but general running? that's a hard one.... win8 seems faster, but then so would a new clean install of Win7. Its hard to compare without running side by side or using benchmark tools.

I'm with you. At first my start-up time was just as bad as with Win 7, even with the various hibernate settings enabled. However, over the last week it has actually improved to the point that it's now noticeably quicker. As far as day to day running goes I've noticed minimal difference though. On my hardware that's not a surprise, it didn't even support Win 7.

A clean install would be nice to boost performance, but I'm due a significant hardware upgrade so the kids (or wife) will get my current system anyway. They won't complain.

Can't honestly say I notice any difference in normal use (E8400@3GHz).

I had the earlier version on a P4 and that ran surprisingly well, I thought!

As for boot time, doesn't seem any faster than W7 but I don't really care as I always sleep my machines.

I don't notice any difference in the OS, when I boot it is quicker by a margin - that said I have a very quick work station with a nice SSD. I find when I boot it takes me into the metro interface, and then when I click desktop some of the start-up processes start to load into the task bar. Sleep is also quicker to wake from I find, as well as seeking wifi connectivity from sleep. I enjoy using windows 8 more though as I find in some areas it's a little more polished (or maybe they just made the features that were always in windows 7 more obvious - search for example)

Downloaded W8 preview from MS, and definitely fell into the Metro-hating camp.

No thats not right.

I actually love Metro. It's REALLY nice.

I also like Windows 7, and Windows 8 underneath Metro.

So why do I think I hate Metro?

Ohhhh... I just hate switching from Metro to desktop and back - it is VERY disconcerting, even for someone who is regularly using different OS's.

I know there are lots of ways around this, but due to my use of multiple OS's, I much prefer to stick with out-of-the box installs where possible. It makes life a lot easier, and certainly faster to get up and running on a new install.

Plus I tend to support newbies, so having a customised OS with different behaviour to theirs is quite counter-productive.

Not dropping in on the Windows forum to hate, just to answer the OP on this thread -
