In the last 24 hours I've updated 10 x Win 7 Pro PCs (with assorted hardware) to Win 10 Pro.
None of these updates have been automatic.

I've had best results with the Windows Update Tool.

I usually got "something happened" errors if I tried to update directly, but creating a USB (once only) and running setup.exe has worked every time.
Usually the software does not ask for your Windows 7 key, but keep it handy just in case ....
Win 10 activation is automatic after the update.

I had no luck Installing from Windows Update, USB, ISO or the Media Download tool - All failing with an error (Windows update general 0x80xxxxxx error and all other tools "something happened".

I deleted the contents of the Download folder as mentioned in this thread and started the install from USB and went through without a hitch.

I am still waiting to be notified for my confirmed update, no files yet either

Should I keep waiting or do a manual download of the ISO etc ?

i would do the manual download, even microsoft recommends it.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I just updated with the USB image and did an upgrade form the USB key within windows... Took about 35 minutes... No issues. So far all my settings and apps seem to be alive including VPN software, windows activation, activation of a few purchased apps etc. Might have to uninstall start8 to see what the news menu looks like (Yes I know about start10)

Nothing happened to so used theWindows Update Tool to create a USB and installed from there. It took a few minutes (can't remember really, was that fast) and up and running now. So far so good... Norton 360, MalwareBytes, Office 2013 all working.

Of course my PC still crashes when I shutdown, but it did that in windows 7, windows 8, windows 8.1 and now windows 10... It's the only time it crashes so I can live with it... A bit annoying though.

Finished installing 10 on my laptop a few hours ago, and so far I'm unimpressed:

I've spent the last hour and a half trying to get touchpad scrolling to work. Scrolling is enabled, and all the gesture stuff is disabled (I'm fairly sure this touchpad is too old to support multi-touch anyway.) Seems to be a common enough problem for there to be quite a few threads about it, but there doesn't appear to be any real solution. Guess it's back to Windows 7 on Saturday.

Installed on a Lenovo X200 from the iso as the installer said something along the lines of 'working with partners to ensure the install goes smoothly on my specific PC'.

So far, so good. Eset NOD32 came over from the old install, as did a few of the Lenovo specific programs. I opened a new Lenovo program that appeared in my start menu that Windows10 must have installed by itself and was prompted to visit a site for an update, which immediately started downloading an installer for Lenovo companion.

Impressive for such old hardware to still have current support.

If you are going back to Windows 7, do it the easy way:

Settings > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7

"This option is only available for a month after you upgrade to Windows 10"

Only takes 5 minutes or less.

It's a Synaptics touchpad. I'm not sure the model: Mouse Properties says "Synaptics TouchPad V6.3 on PS/2 Port 1" and I didn't notice anything meaningful in Device Manager.
