MikeB4: I have been using mine as intended, Photos (as encouraged by MS), personal video, documents etc. Currently my drive is at 390 GB and climbing at about 2 to 3 GB per month.

If they are only pissed at big usage again invited by MS, why essentially do away with the small plans and free plan.

They simply are not being straight up with their customers, it smacks of the MS of old returning.

So another 16 Years before hitting the 1TB mark at your current rate if you have a 365 personal account:P

Your point?

My plan which was part of the purchased product has suddenly changed which means I can no longer use it as planned and encouraged by MS.

It's the same as the fiasco with Sparks first unlimited plan an oh my god people used it as an unlimited plan as promoted, absolutely terrible. So Spark pulled it, it was a cynical bait as it appears MS has done here. And given the BS being put out by MS trying to justify only enhances the look that it was a cynical bait.

So going by what you have said it looks like you have a 365 account (if you had the 100 or 200 then nothing is changing for you as the blog says so stock up now while it's still active).
If you have the 365 account then you are currently paying each month or buying from a store and using a code.
This means from some time in 2016 you will get 1TB of space, going by your current rate that will take you 16 years to get to the 1TB (And I bet things will change in the next 16 years so this becomes a non issue for you).

Sure it sucks that they changed it but it's getting changed, nothing more can really be done about it.
If it bugs you that much there are other services (like google drive etc) that are still unlimited and act as a "drive" otherwise there are "backup" system like backblaze that have unlimited backups for $5 for each pc.

I am not surprised. Offering unlimited is a great way to get a customer base. Even when your competitors like dropbox etc never offered it. Its finally came back to bite them in the butt.

Onedrive never really worked that well anyway the sync was really flakey and there were all sorts of restrictions with filenames etc. Personally I pay for google drive because it just worked.

I do feel bad for the people that are getting dropped to 5gigs down from 30+ however (i have a number of "free" extras on my account that are being removed).

Your are forgetting MS has been pushing Cloud first very aggressively and now it appears they have radically changed direction and really screwed the non 365 users and damaged the confidence of 365 users.

When will they decide 1TB is too much?

I wonder how much pressure was applied by other cloud providers?

I don't think MS has ever said "store everything in the cloud"  their advertising says "OneDrive cloud storage Save documents, photos, and videos online and access them from nearly anywhere"
Also going by the numbers released it would seem the "average" user only stores about 6gigs.

Sure others will store more/less.
However the office 365 for (personal/home etc) has never been advertised (from what i can find) as unlimited
https://products.office.com/en-us/compare-microsoft-office-products

Even using wayback machine in april it said 1tb

And going by the blog there is no change for office 365 business accounts

They never said unlimited. Except when they did. https://blogs.office.com/2014/10/27/onedrive-now-unlimited-storage-office-365-subscribers/

I'm not sure what the debate is here. Microsoft has unilaterally changed its cloud offering and understandably some customers are upset.

MS have shot themselves in the foot me thinks with dropping the free 15 GB to 5 GB.

I use the 'free' 15GB Google Drive, but this ties me into other Google products:
- I pay for Google Play music on monthly subscription
- I buy apps for the Play store
- I purchase books from Play store
- Google profit from my use of other free Google products through advertising revenue.

If I had switched from Google to MS at some future point (and I have been watching Windows 10/phone with real interest), MS would have picked up similar revenue from my custom. But now they won't get it as I can't even continue backing up my Google Drive to Onedrive without paying for it. No thanks.

Lias: Smells bad alright, kind of glad of the timing, was just looking at moving to O365, guess not.

I use Office 365 at home but us Google drive for all storage.  Only use Onedrive for photos..

If you have more than 5GB of photos then you will need to review who you use, Google have some good photo storage options

With Google Photos giving you unlimited storage for images up to 16MP, and video up to 1080p, this is a pretty stupid move by Microsoft.
Or will we see Google follow them?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Very, very disappointing. The reasoning sounds like a convenient (and nonsensical) excuse - why punish everyone for the actions of a few?

Onedrive is not the entirety of "Cloud".

Microsoft's Cloud focus is all about Azure, O365, and about 100 other services of which Onedrive is but one. This is not a "major shift" for Microsoft. It is the reduction of a low return service.

From their press releases they look to be wanting to reposition Onedrive more towards docs and collaboration, not just online storage.

If you are a heavy user it does suck yes - but if you want to keep using it then does 1TB work?
