So copy...

\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Favourites - the favourites folder
[For other browsers like Firefox: Just export your bookmarks.]

\Documents and Settings\[USER]\My Documents\[THE FOLDER/FILES YOU NEED]

[THE FOLDER/FILES YOU NEED] has to be selective. Pick only stuff you know, and avoid any system and/or componentry files at all costs.

What's in the user data file? Good question. Even I don't know much about it.

EDIT: Changes all the forward-slashes to backslashes. I still can't get a grip on Windows can I?

ok so i copied only favorites and my docs then formatted reinstalled windwows and the driver for my mainboard nothing else

but when i look at the local area connection status when the computer is idle it is constantly sending and recieving data (packets) is this between my cable modem and the computer only or is it out to the world? and what does packets translate to in bytes kb mb or g.

The sending of packets to and forth can be anything, so it can be both to just the modem or the world. I recommend that you install security software before you connect to the Internet. That means unplugging the Ethernet connection while installing and not connecting it until the software has successfully been installed.

Packet size is determined by the system. I don't really know what XP has set as the size for each packet.

Traffic is normal. Windows might be checking for updates - which will have a lot to apply - downloading those and other things happening.

Now that you have the machine up and running I recommend you go immediatelly to www.avast.com and install the antivirus. It's free for home use.

Don't worry about other security software for now - the Windows firewall should be ok to prevent things coming from outside. Make sure you don't install suspicious software to prevent things coming from inside.

With this in mind got to Windows Update and install everything recommended. When finished, reboot and go to Windows Update again. Repeat this until there is no more update available for your machine.

Only then you should start using it.

Generic host process is normal. Before you go closing stuff - is all working ok now or is it still giving errors?

Windows XP (whether you have SP2 or not) should have at least some form of a firewall.

What do you mean that your 'version is screwed'???

Generic Host Process is required for Windows XP to function normally (like LSASS.exe, SVCHOST.exe and others - so don't touch Task Manager unless you know what process you're dealing with)

The easiest thing to do is to go to an internet cafe or a friends house download and burn a copy of sp2 then install it onto your pc, this could possibly help as your cd/file may havea corrupt file or something and also i recommend a virus scan of your xp disc anything could planted itself into it. hope this helps.

The full download-able copy is pretty big... That's a lot to download at an internet cafe or even a friends house! Laughing

(Don't worry about the title - it's still the same thing)

ok so all was going well with my install, no critical errors and everything working alright.

then it happens first error of the session, generic host process has encountered a problem and needs to close. whats with this if it is importnat to have running what do i do.

any at least everything i need to do still works.

but now i am concerned about the traffic flow when the system is idle and not using any internet apps. so i download and install zone alarm.

clicking it into maximum security and deny on anything i didnt know. with win32 being one. and it seemed like it did the trick.

now however after turning things off for the night and back on in the morning i cant get back in.

i click the user icon and also try the administrator button in safe mode and it says loading your settings then saving your settings then logging off and just stays at the welcome screen

anyone in kapiti want to help here?

I say thi is a hardware problem. It will be hard to pinpoint on a forum, better to take to a technician.

I would say either memory needs to be reseated or replaced or hard drive is bad.

What installation?

Secondly, are you very sure that your system isn't compromised is ANY way? (dodgy software, open access, etc, etc...)

One of the computers at my school does exactly what you have now - logs in, logs out. It might be malware.

I think he means the current Windows install - not a specific software installation action.

Since this is a fresh new Windows install and the errors are coming from Service Host, I still think it's either memory or HD problems.
