@old3eyes 1809 isnt even waiting in Windows Update. Winver says 1803, and Windows Update says it is up to date.
I know I can force the update, but given that it hasnt happened "naturally" I am wondering if MS thinks maybe my laptop is not 1809 compatible??
It is possible that

Thank you for the tips.
I do not have a WSUS server, its a stand alone laptop.
Pause updates is off.
My channel is "Semi-Annual" (the only other choice is "Semi-Annual Targeted")
I am not part of any Enterprise branch.
However, now that I am "looking", I notice that I have a driver install going rogue.
Conexant MEDIA 7/3/2018 12:00:00 AM - 8.65.262.0 seems to have successfully installed 115 times but keeps reappearing back in Windows Update to install again.
Maybe once I sort that out, 1809 will come down.

Interesting. Managed to go to 1803 and some firmware updates but that 1809 upgrade has failed tried x2. Im not too bothered though just the principle

Cousins computer that I just looked at had some HP USB something driver failing to install and holding up all the other updates, was still on 1809 with no updates in 9+ months as a result.
Seems pretty braindead of windows update to let one failing update jam everything up like that. I removed anything HP from device manager with show hidden devices, and all the software for the old HP printer thing and that got things moving again.

I notice in your signature you say the Pro 4 has 128GB SSD. 1903 needs at least 32GB free to install - after the download.
I've installed 1903 with no problems on an ancient (2012 vintage or thereabouts) Sony Viao notebook, that was never fully win 10 compatible as well as a couple of newer devices.

1809 had alot of issues and only been released to most pc for less than a month I think ie weeks before 1903 came out - I know some hp laptop had lots of issues with 1809 and has not on the clear to install list a few months back. The media update is very annoying - MS have released a hide a patch program which I run every time that driver got updated to hide it or keeps installing, but look like it fixed in 1903 tho, as I have not had to do that yet after manual updating to 1903.
Since updating to 1903 wifi performance on one of my laptops has tanked. I used to get speeds of 400mps+ download and 300mbps+ upload no problem at home. I now struggle to get above 50mbps down and 20mbps up. All drivers are up to date and I test using the Speedtest App. Wired connection is no issue with speeds of 950mbps down and 500mbps up no issue at all.
I have changed nothing with my network and my non Windows devices are still hitting good speeds. The only thing that has changed is 1903. Frustrating.
Just upgraded 3 PC's.
All my personal settings have been wiped, including security authorisations for powershell scripts and things like search histories.
They effectively installed a completely new OS that only remembers the users and drive mappings.
All my remote desktop settings were cleared out too.
GRRRR!

I used the update manager.
I've just upgraded my HP IQ816 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) a few days ago and my HP X18 1099ux (Intel Centrino 2, 4GB RAM) yesterday using the upgrade assistant for both as 1903 wasn't being offered. Both are 11 year old machines and both seem to be running really well. The IQ816 hasn't been used in over a year due to constant system freezes since upgrading to Windows 10, so it'll be great if continues as well as it's going right now.
Despite what a lot of people say, I'm taking my hat off to Microsoft for what I consider to be outstanding support [in general] when it comes to older hardware.
Updated desktop to 1903 yesterday … took about 3.5 hours all up for full completion.
Last night started process for laptop, paused it after 4 hours. Restarted this morning and after another 5 hours it is just nearing the 100% "install" phase … I assume there will be a couple of reboots and 'installing do not turn your computer off' phases yet to go.
That seems way excessive for time to install. Would have been half an hour max on my crappiest machine which is some atom based TV settop things that only have 32 gigs so I have to remove everything on it to get it enough space to install. Removing apps took longer than the install.
