macuser: I wish it still didn't take 1000 clicks to change network settings in Windows. They need to build a proper network settings application just like OSX.

It's a pity you have to use the Network settings so often to try and fix Apples terrible networking.

Edit; it took 3 clicks to get into the advanced setting for network in Win 10

Takes 6 various left and right clicks to access DNS when right clicking on Wifi on taskbar, they should put IP and DNS settings in adapter preferences without needing to access IP4.

Especially because once you've opened IP4 settings you can't move windows underneath it so you need to move properties to the right area of the screen before opening IP4.

It could just be made easier...

My current PC after I initially set it up I have not needed to touch the Networking settings, this includes various upgrades and installs of Win 10. On my iMac my Networking is always falling over.

Just installed a new internal hard drive and formatted it. "Tap here to choose what to do with removable drives". Is an internal drive considered removable now?

If anyone has file sharing problems, like not being able to see shares with an error 80070035, path not found, check this registry key - HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters.

Under Parameters, check if you have a key, "SMB2". If you have, delete it as that causes the grief. It looks like a key carried over from much earlier windows installs and stops shares being accessed from a comp that is using an MS account.

Don't ask me how long it took to find this out!!

Thanks for that useful link. It gave me the info on the value. My SMB2 entry had a value of 0 thus disabling it.

Just tried it with a 1 and the shares came up fine.

I think maybe that it is not needed any more as the client and server negotiate the highest level themselves. In which case my win 10 comps should have negotiated at SMB3 and not be bothered that SMB2 was disabled. Or do they now have to try all levels and crap out if one is disabled? Who knows!

In any event, something changed as previews got beyond about 10130.

gzt: the settings vs control panel is interesting tho. personally got a bit annoyed years ago with 'administrative tools' and 'control panel' duplication ; ). so it seems maybe adding one to that group now we have three (polite laughter). but strangely this is not bothering me & I really like the new settings design and feel.

I do have a small problem with these newer tools which I fear will get worse going forward. If you boot into safe mode the start menu and and other metro apps, including the settings one, stop working. So it's back to using the old tools if they still exist.

Hopefully that's all fixable though.

Universal Apps require UAC to work and as far as I am aware, UAC is not enabled if the account is administrative (not sure what mode safe uses though).

Just received the 10240 update. Looks and feels good, but I've lost the Brother 3150 laser printer, which worked perfectly until now.

I was a geek before the word was invented!

Odd losing the printer. Should come back, though. I noticed my very old Canon S750 even got a driver update!!! I was most impressed.

Been using 10240 for a few days, much more stable than 10166 (not hard).

The Intel drivers still cause a BSOD pretty much once a day as it seems to have issues with the switching Intek\Nvidia GPU in the laptop. Not sure this is MS's fault, seems to be a common complaint, hopefully sorted soon as it's a pain.

Otherwise other than the continued obfuscation of "advanced" features, very impressed with it all.

I checked further and couldn't even see the printer's web page. Power cycled the printer and it reappeared in W10.

I'm still not thrilled with the Start menu but I've only dabbled with customising it so far. Vast improvement on 8 but Microsoft have had so many OS misses in the last decade that they really need this to be good.

I was a geek before the word was invented!

Question for Nathan at a guess: We have three machines here that have reserved our upgrades and one that is my Insider machine and already on build 10240 and set to send and receive builds and updates to my LAN. Does this mean that those three machines will get the upgrade much closer to or even the 29th since the build is in da house already?

Yes you can. You get the option to sync selective stuff or not restore from a previous a PC backup.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yes you can. You get the option to sync selective stuff or not restore from a previous a PC backup.

I can't see where you configure that option when I add an account?
