One of the key take-outs from this announcement is it is not a good idea to rely on one vendor or technology, especially for backups. Redundancy is an absolute key principle to adhere to. After months of playing around and thinking about it I have the following schema for our critical files - photos, home videos, documents, PC Backups, etc.

Local Storage (iMac) --> synced with NAS (Synology) --> synced with cloud storage (Dropbox).

Naturally you can change any PC, cloud storage component as you wish. The first two parts are locally based and only the third-tier is cloud-based. Luckily we are on the unlimited Vodafone plan so that made this process work well.

We have about 750GB of stuff and I am happy to pay the annual $150-odd for 1TB of Dropbox storage. Peace of mind and all that.

@Tinshed, have you looked at a "proper" backup provider like crashplan?

I'd suggest others who have contacts via their professional lives do the same.

Funny you should say that as we are using Crashplan at work. It was a breeze to setup, nice interface and now just works seamlessly. Untried in anger though.

Yep, VPN only.
avoid all the nice, easy consumer level internet/cloud options on you NAS, you might find it becomes a P2P/torrent node for other NAS owners (as per one clients Qnap )
Not to mention the various security holes when opened up to the internet , people have lost data that way, NAS's hacked into.

You're overstating what Google actually offer.

Google don't guarantee photos up to 16MP and videos at 1080p will be stored at those resolutions but they do guarantee that they will be downsampled if they exceed those resolutions:

"If the camera takes photos with 16 megapixels (MP) resolution or lower, most stored photos will essentially look the same using either storage option." cf. "If the camera takes photos with a resolution higher than 16 MP, then photos will be downsized to 16 MP."
"If the video is 1080p or less, your stored video will look close to the original." cf. "If the video is higher than 1080p, then it will be reduced to high-definition 1080p."

After reading the Onedrive blog post it won't effect me that much. Thanks to the geekzone heads-up a couple of years ago about the 10GB loyalty bonus (was only available to redeem for a short window of opportunity), will still have 15GB OneDrive storage next year. I might even go over that now just to get the 1 year free Office 365 subscription.

I use https://www.odrive.com/m/ + https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/home

Unlimited photos for $12 US per year.

Everything else (documents etc) go into One Drive so the 5GB wont really affect me. Ill probably use the Amazon unlimited storage for $70 once i start exceeding my limits everywhere else.

The standard conditions in Google Photo's ToS also give me pause to upload to the service, especially when I'm storing photos that are exclusively licensed to third party's. Hence this is why I'm sticking with Onedrive/other third party solutions.
