I get the impression this part of a planned destruction of OneDrive and it is their goal to close it. So why would anyone trust their "Mobile First, Cloud First" BS. And why would anyone now trust Windows Phone (give it a year then residing with the Dodo), the current Win 10 pricing , watch for annual subscription in around 18 months including Xbox OS.

Can you post that link under Satya's door when you're in Seattle? :)

It does seem a very amateurish way to lose goodwill and trust in their cloud offerings.  Probably thought most only use less than 5GB, so lower the base quota to match that.  Even if you don't even use that 10GB extra, now having it taken away from you hurts.

Should've just frozen the free storage and let the growing demand for data drive subscriptions.

Trust and truth go hand in hand, no truth no trust, half truth half trust. MS are not being truthful so why would people trust them.

Creating distrust with customers is not going to create good business.

Also if Microsoft want to encourage users to upgrade to 365, hurting the free services is not going to do it.

Sort of got to make it compelling on its own and at a price point people are willing to pay.

Then to my mind MS should have taken considerably more care in how they offered the services initially, then much more thoughful process in how they reduced said services.

MikeB4: I am going to investigate self provided cloud options and eliminate these occurrences

Either a QNAP or Synology NAS, or if running Windows, Tonido...

What would you suggest for a mixed network, that is, Windows 10, Windows 7, OSX Yosemite, IOS, Android, Xbox One and Panasonic TV?

with the option for remote access.

Linux based freenas, open nas or others - all file systems supported, fully expandable, large range of app options including vpn, web server, db server, media server, media streaming, remote p2p downloading, remote desktop access etc etc etc. there is no other provider of nas systems with more offerings nad such an awesome stability history.

Didn't apple kill one of their cloud offerings a while back?  One OS it was there, next it was gone? I cant rember what it was called but they did stop one version / type and open another.

I also think people possibly need to realise that for many cloud services, the current pricing is only introductory in order to grow the customer base and reduce their competitors as they get market dominance. They therefore will be making major losses on some accounts. At least that is the argument some cloud companies are using who are now hiking prices. The problem is that once these companies get market dominance, it is very hard for competitors to compete and new entrants to come in. You only have to look at auction websites. Also cloud video services, I would expect pricing to go up rapidly.

I recall they killed off iweb, which I believe was their website builder system. That is just another downside of cloud systems. As is the risk of the cloud provider going out of business, although that is one reason people use Onedrive, because it is unlikely to go out of business.

This hits Windows Phone particularly hard. Technically it's possible to select a different auto upload service provider, but up to now Dropbox is the only one who has actually implemented this in their app - and Dropbox aren't renowned for their generous plans. These days I doubt a phone with severely curtailed photo/video upload capability would find many takers.

I feel that Microsoft has self delivered the coup de grace to Windows Phone just a short few months after their "Mobile first, Cloud first" extravaganza.

I just checked my personal onedrive. It says I am using 21GB of 30GB. I have about 5 GB of photos, documents on it, so I assume the other 16GB is photos that have been uploaded using the auto upload option on the app.

So, at some stage, will I be told I need to delete down to the revised 5GB limit, or pay up to keep current?

Neither I'd suggest. You'll get a nag screen saying you are full, offering you a paid plan and refusing to let you upload anything else until you either bring it under 5GB or pay.
