Does a Surface have some sort of recovery image available? If so, then I'd imagine that you could restore to it that way.

I found these instructions include recovering from (and creating) a usb recovery drive:

but I'd like to know if anyone has tried 10 on the surface pro first and if so how well it works before going down that road ;-) I see continuum is not included yet, but it looks to me like it should still work ok...

Still covers some of the compromises with the technical preview on a tablet, and none of them sound major. e.g. without continuum all apps run in windowed mode (unsurprising) and there's no "modern" app version of IE.

FYI XBMC works fine. Had to reinstall my PlayTV drivers and fiddle with the PVR backend but everything seems OK. Slightly slower channel changes though :(

Umm... that's a straight lift from the quotes that the MS Marketing spinmeisters have been providing to websites such as gizmodo, and doesn't really shed much light at all on WinX. Plus, it's supposed to be an operating system, not a religious experience.
For reference, what I demand of this version of WinX isn't much different from what I have always demanded - stable, functional, and with a sane and usable user interface. A requirement which Win8 failed so dramatically and inexplicably.

What is it that you'd like to know?

The OP asked for why Windows 10 isn't called Windows 9, and that's the answer. Its a significant overhaul of the way that Windows is designed, engineered and delivered for the cloud first, mobile first world.

sidefx: Anybody tried putting this on a surface pro? I've got a gen 1 SP that I mostly just use for media and web\email type stuff -would be nice to try it on. Possible? What are the risks\chances of rolling back to 8.1 if needed?

works fine, I'm using it on Surface Pro 1, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 perfectly fine.

Some quick impressions. I loaded the developers preview in a VM on my iMac. It installed very easily - once i had the right options in VirtualBox and the installation picked up all my (old) MS environment from the days when I was running Windows 8 on my home PC. [I have recently switched to iMac.] Quite impressive to see my old desktop wallpaper again! Of course my attention was focussed on the Start menu and I liked what I saw. The best of both worlds if you will. And nice to see the usual window handles on the 'metro' app windows. Like many, I can still remember the horror I felt when first using Windows 8 and trying to work out how to close a 'metro' window! Anyway after a 5 or 10 minute play - so very superficial - my impression is that Windows 10 is Windows 8 with a decent Start menu. There is no doubt more under the covers but I have to say that it is more 'eye candy' than anything else. And I say that as someone who much prefered Windows 8 - with Start8 - over Windows 7.

I've been messing around with the Visual Studio 2014 CTP on the Win 10 Enterprise version for most of the day. The start menu is ok, but one thing I encountered is that an application installed (office 365) failed to turn up in it when installed (and I miss the little down arrow at the bottom of the start screen in windows 8.1 that I have gotten used to). The menu finally turned up after a reboot, but I am wondering now for applications that have lots of sub-apps, how that will work in the new start menu.

Also, I was hoping for a logout button, but one still has to click on the persons name in order to get that (its in win 8.1), or remember the windows key sequence. It appears to be confusing since a power button icon sits right next to the username.

I do like the new windows chrome and the 3d effect for overlapping windows. Also I noticed a bit of animation (smooth scrolling I suspect) when moving windows around. I see there is support for HTTP/2 and SPDY so that is another thing that will need a bit of looking into.

Have not tried running metro apps as normal tiled windows yet, but if that works, then I can see the point in writing universal apps for it.

first impressions
installed without a problem on my Samsung ultrabook.
everything just worked out the box. winx was noticeable fast starting up / shutting down that 8.1
fired up civ 5 to try out a game. the game loaded in about a 1/3 of the time, that it took on 8.1, also all the touch options in the game worked.

Upgraded 10 Enterprise over the top of 8.1 Enterprise, was expecting to have to reinstall all my apps but I was wrong.

Definitely much improved, going to see if I can install XenDesktop 7.6 VDA onto it to have a play

From a VDI perspective it will be much better with the start menu instead of the start screen so I think uptake won't be a problem

Fairly seamless win8 -> win10 upgrade for me.   (minor glitches from obscure things I do with my system) and it's reporting allowed me to find the stupid AD policy that has been messing with the Metro Apps in our domain.

Question to those who may know: Is there a shortcut key, or single mouse gesture (eg double click the title bar) to fullscreen metro apps?
Secondary question: Is there a way to keep metro apps fullscreen if they lose the focus. I have several monitors, and making one of them the ABC app would be quite nice.   I can get them to be maximised.. but not fullscreen.

Windows Key + Up Arrow will maximise any window - in Win8 onwards, but doesn't do fullscreen immersive. You can use the ".." menu and choose fullscreen, but i'm not sure of a key combo yet. If you want the permanent fullscreen experience, you can set the start screen instead of start menu (right-click taskbar, properties, start menu). When the "continuum' design rolls out, it will auto-switch (if you want) between Desktop and Tablet mode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_O-LrGL-YQ
