Windows 8 is turning out to be disappointing . . .

I purchased the cheap $20 upgrade of win 8 for one of my pc's as a trial and I just can't tolerate metro.

I'd upgrade my machines to win 8 if microsoft released a version with the windows 7 start menu (and free windows media center).

Is it just me or is there a pattern here:

Win Xp - Great!
Win Vista - Crap!
Win 7 - Great!
Win 8 - Crap!
Win 9 - ????

I for one would seriously put off buying a new PC as long as I could because of Win 8. Not surprising that others are doing the same.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

lol please. I am going to point out the obvious bits from some of the tweets.

Doom and gloom from IDC about PC shipments. Their data doesn't include Windows 8 tablets with detachable keyboards. Basically all win8 PCs.

IDC says Apple Mac shipments dropped 7.5% worldwide in Q1. Obviously this was caused by Windows 8.

but IDCs figures don't include hybrids and tablets. The focus for Windows 8 hardware.

IDC says Apple's Mac shipments were DOWN 7.5%. Gartner says Apple's Mac shipments were UP 7.4%

Waiting for the "OMG PC IS DEAD" stories to end and for someone to do the real story: "Why is Lenovo winning?"

No different to when Gartner released their report last week showing that PC and Windows 8 are doomed when they actually never counted ultrabooks and tablets in the equation.

Now that I've got use to the metro layout I love windows 8 and prefer it over windows 7

Sure, but windows 2000 great, windows xp great. so there's two back to back great operating systems :)

windows 8 does have some great improvements (copying files dialog is a lot better, with pause/resume which is handy for large files over wifi, task manager is better, i prefer the lock screen etc).

but yes the metro apps are a PITA on a traditional desktop. you should be able to switch all of that off if you dont want to use it. and the search is a lot worse.

The issue is also that the desktop matured at windows 7 and there are not many improvements to be made.

MS should have moved to incremental upgrades that that point rather than big bang product releases.

I've never come across a program that has forced me to use a metro app over a traditional desktop app, And I uninstalled all the "Common" live apps e.g sports, weather..

Tbh I prefer the windows 8 menu over the traditional Windows 7 start menu, I find it alot quicker.

if you type in "Update" the metro windows update app starts. there are other like some control panel/network stuff that is the same.

I like switching network on/off if you need to restart your wifi for any reason.

but generally I never use any metro apps on my desktop/laptop and hate it when they open (pdf viewer etc) when I didn't want to use them. so turning them off completely should be allowed.

I think Windows 8 is almost usable.

I agree with some of the others here and think MS should have made such large UI element changes in steps.

WinNT 4.0 was Great for me too.

I prefer StartIsBack over Start8. Hooks into Startmenu code in Explorer and doesn't require any extra services etc running.

From my playing around with win 8 I found it initially quite irritating to use.
It certainly wasnt intuitive to use (I purposely didnt read much info on it in advance). I figure something easy to use shouldnt need a manual. Knowing that you had to mouse out to the corners etc for menu options is a bit whacky. I think it has been too targeted at the touch interface. But thats not every one.

Where I work there are quite a few students going through - I had to help several who has windows 8 (new laptops) and the ones I dealt with didnt seem too keen on the new menuing.

I have to say that on my copy of WIN8 I found the lack of the START button to be the biggest omission. Its all very well to have a marvelous new look etc - but its pretty well bound to irritate people who have got used to doing things in a certain way and just want to get on with things. You do have to try and carry your legacy customers along if you want to stay in business.

I installed the free Pokki start menu and started smiling again. I think omitting this mode was a great mistake from MS and seeing that quite a few people are offering free start button software makes me think it would have been extremely easy for MS to have provided it - so why didnt they?

Just picked up a HP Envy x2 convertible tablet/laptop a week or so ago. Windows 8 shines on this device. Having the touchscreen in a laptop environment is actually killer, you can just grab the screen and scroll.

I now find myself more and more often trying to touch the screen of my 17" Dell, also running Windows 8. A split second before I touch it I remember that it isn't.

I think before people hate on 'chimp' arm too much, spend a week or so with a touchscreen laptop running Windows 8. It's actually super great.
