So I have a Harvey Norman laptop that came with WIN8 that I upgraded to WIN10 Home.
Another desktop that came with WIN8 that I upgraded to WIN10 Home.

Neither work when going

  1. Settings
  2. Update and Security
  3. Activation
  4. Go To Store

Called Microsoft and spoke to an indian based helpdesk on a crackly phoneline
Spent 5 solid minutes reciting my email address letter for letter
Got put on hold several times and she asked me to pay $399 to upgrade to Pro.
Then line disconnected while iwas telling her the store says $199

Can someone tell me an easy way to just upgrade these two machines to Pro wihtout spending hours rolling back and reimaging etc???

Have you activated the Windows 8 boxes BEFORE updating to Windows 10?

Restore everything to Windows 8, check the boxes are activated then try again, one at a time.

Yes they were both activated and fully working prior to upgrade to win10home

Surely theres a link somewhere on MS where you can even just opt to buy win10pro and download then load it up?

How was the update installed? Via Windows Update or did you run the USB installer?

If it was the USB installer did you select the same edition?

You might have to check the options again - restore to Windows 8 and double-check...

Is NZ a supported country for upgrades from the Microsoft store?

Is there a reason why spending US$199 to upgrade from Win 10 Home to Pro makes sense? What features do you need?

Pro... Yes, you are upgrading to a different version. See my suggestions before and check you are upgrading Home to Home, not Pro.

Pretty much what Freitasm says. You dont have Windows 8 Pro so when you upgrade to Windows 10 your version is changing from Windows 8 (non pro) to Windows 10 Pro.

Read here for more information
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-nz/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install

For a review on whats different between Home and Pro versions see here:
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/feature/windows/windows-10-home-vs-windows-10-pro-uk-difference-3618710/

To summarise if youre not joining a domain, then you probably dont need Pro.

Windows 7 Home, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 -> Windows 10 Home

Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro

Thanks for pointers.

I ended up buying win10pro which is what i wanted for $399? i think.
Burnt to DVD ran setup and it upgraded with the keep my files option.

Reason for wanting Pro was the lack of gpedit.msc and a few other useful things lacking in the home version.
