I had W10 1511 installed on my system and upon the launch of the W10 1607 (Anniversary Edition), I set my system not to install updates and to defer upgrades

Until Saturday this was working and I had no reason to check the settings just to "double check"

I woke up on Sunday to find that I have several notifications - including one from the system advising me that I had installed a feature update - checking the system, sure enough I was now running W10 1607
Checking the start menu, all of my customisations had been removed and I had additional bloatware installed.

Needless to say I was not a happy person and after cursing and swearing Microsoft, I started looking for what I had missed in settings that allowed the update to get through.

Sadly my Google search ability fails and so I thought I would ask other geeks how they have blocked Windows 10 1607 from being installed ..

Hopefully when I roll back (I believe I have a week), I can stop it from updating again

you deferred the upgrade and the deferral ended late last week.  You can't defer upgrades forever.

Your customizations being removed (it would be good to know more about what you mean by this) sounds like a bug and if you could put this into Feedback Hub up so Microsoft knows about it and it can be tracked.

Modern Apps that you uninstalled, coming back is something that is fixed in the next Feature Update (RS2).

  • When RS2 is installed, apps that the user had previously uninstalled will not be put back.  (Windows already tracks the list of removed apps.)
  • When RS3 is installed, apps that the IT admin has de-provisioned will not be put back.  (RS2 give Windows the ability to keep track of what apps were de-provisioned, so that RS3 and beyond will not put them back.)

See https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mniehaus/2016/08/23/windows-10-1607-keeping-apps-from-coming-back-when-deploying-the-feature-update/ for shorter-term workarounds.

It sounds like what breaks with an "upgrade" working differently than an "update". As with 1511 which also lost some of my customization. From memory, I have to reconfigure my non-standard OneDrive setup.

Thanks nathan
I have tried to find information on how long the defer lasts, but can't - can you shed any light on the number of days I can defer upgrades for
I suspect that if I roll back, that the defer is not reset back to zero and my "counter" will tell the system that I once again have to upgrade.

Hopefully soon Microsoft will realize that they do not know what is best for our computers - if you have the Pro edition, then do not force changes

You should let Microsoft know using the Feedback Hub app if you encounter settings issues like this with a Feature Update, these are bugs.

Personally I've not had a problems with OneDrive needing to be re-setup myself.  I install about 4 Feature Updates a week on my daily driver Surface :)

As I understand things, build 1507 is end of life in feb as the creator update (1704) will be out in the march timeframe. So this means that 1607 would be the minimum supported version at that stage.

From memory, 1511 was a feature upgrade (which is different from an update I think), and I am not sure how long this was available for. It was my understanding that updates/upgrades are only supported 2 versions back.  I am not sure how long the consumer version can defer updates - for some reason 30 days seems to spring to mind - but was not this feature introduced in 1607 (defer feature updates)?

I sneaky way to disable updates forever would be to use the Metered Ethernet Connection Support which will be shipping in the creator update (1704). At the moment this can only be done via regedit.

I should be noted if you use Windows Defender as your antivirus. Since it uses Windows Update to automatically downloads the latest definitions. This will stop working on a metered connection. So it would be best to use a different antivirus.

Metered Ethernet Connection Support: Based on your feedback, we’ve added the “Set as metered connection” option to the Ethernet (LAN) connections in Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet. Just like mobile broadband and Wi-Fi connections, this option helps you to restrict background data usage from some applications and gives you more control over how data is used over the Ethernet connection.

the official name is Feature Update not Feature Upgrade

as for the dates - End of servicing for Windows 10, version 1507

With the availability of Windows 10, version 1607 to the VLSC on January 26th, the 60-day grace period for Windows 10, version 1507 will begin. That means, after March 26th, 2017, Windows 10, version 1507 will no longer be serviced as only the two most Current Branch for Business (CBB) versions are actively serviced.

At work I have been looking at deployment options for W10 (both 1511 and now 1607) and as part of the deployment had created a PS1 script to remove 99% of all installed modern apps (Store is kept, but access blocked via AppLocker). I took this PS1 home last night to remove the bloatware that Microsoft had installed onto my system without my consent and now thankfully have a slightly smaller start menu and am back to only having one tile on the start menu (Edge).

I then set about trying to fix my corrupted jump lists which all broke in the upgrade (could not add/remove anything) - painless except for the fact I shouldn't have to fix something like this.

I then tried to get the system to make "Documents" the Documents folder I have sitting under C:\Users\[name]\Documents rather than my OneDrive. However so far I have not got this to work as "access denied" and the options inside Settings to change the default save location from OneDrive to Documents does not work (as soon as I apply, it changes back to OneDrive)

I then spent an hour giving my Feedback inside the Feedback Hub, but fat lot of good that will do me.

Microsoft - leave my computer alone!
(now I understand how all those people feel who are running more advanced hardware than I am who have to suffer when Microsoft decide they need a new driver that breaks things)

clicking the Defer Upgrades button the Settings, WU UI changes you from Current Branch to Current Branch for Business.  CBB gets declared after CB has been in production for around 4 months.

Sometime shortly after CBB media becomes available (this was last week) your device will receive the CBB build.

Using Group Policy you can defer Feature Updates for an additional 8 months on top of the ~4 months I mention above.

Thanks for the links

Why do Microsoft make this information so hard to find?

Looks like what I want to do is to steal a MAK key from work, and install LTSB of 1511 Enterprise on my home computer so I do not have to deal with this frustration.

Anyone got any idea how I gain control of my own Documents folder?

Microsoft really need a Windows Business edition as it just doesn't look good to have Candycrush pre installed on a business PC, and you keep having updates breaking things over and over again. Not to mention having business clients keep asking us why it's so unreliable and why they have to keep paying for us to come and fix it.

I've done the same. The trick is to do it during setup/automation before the GUI is complete and apply to the default user account. Or it only removes it for the current user. And you can't seem to apply to default user after the fact

Also check some of the data-hungry processes.  For example, I noticed that peer to peer updates was switched on again by the update and bunch of permissions that i had turned off.

That edition is called Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, which is also now available as a subscription so its obtainable by anyone.

What is it in Win10 that is so unreliable that you have to keep going back to fix it?

Default install of Windows 10 1607 Enterprise, obtained via VLSC installed Candy Crush and Asphalt 8 and a host of other unwanted/unneeded bloatware that is simply not required in an enterprise environment.

(I believe the games may have been shortcuts to the store, but even so, shortcuts to games do not belong in the enterprise)
